On Saturday night, the Scots Men's Basketball team took on perennial power Wheaton College (Ill.) on their home court and dropped a 76-49 decision to the host squad. Alma is now 0-2 on the season, while Wheaton improved to 2-0 on the very young campaign.
"We ran into a buzzsaw tonight against a very good team," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "Wheaton played two really good games this weekend and beating Capital by 40 points was impressive. We could not handle their defensive pressure and it was a good lesson for our team moving forward."
The Scots held a 2-0 lead in the game but the good news ended at that point. Alma trailed 13-10 with 10:54 remaining in the first half but a 12-0 run led to Wheaton having a commanding 33-12 halftime advantage. The two teams played to basically a stalemate for the final 20 minutes but the Scots could not close the gap.
Fr. C Charley Helmer (Six Lakes, Mich./Montabella) led the Scots with 12 points and he added four rebounds. Jr. F Jake Murawske (Harbor Beach, Mich./Harbor Beach) had eight points, while Fr. C Ivy Johnson (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) pulled down nine rebounds. In addition, Sr. F Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) finished with seven points.
The Scots are hosting a Thanksgiving Classic next weekend and will play host to Ohio Northern University on Saturday night beginning at 7:00 p.m. They will then take on Heidelberg University at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
