Men's Hoops took on host Calvin College on Wednesday night and lost a heartbreaking 100-99 game in overtime

On Wednesday night, the Scots Men's Basketball team hit the road down to Grand Rapids to take on MIAA foe Calvin College and dropped a heartbreaking 100-99 overtime game. Alma now has a 7-15 record in 2011-12 with a 3-8 league mark, while the Knights are now 7-4 in the MIAA and 12-10 for the 2011-12 season.

"Our energy and effort was outstanding except for about two minutes at the end of regulation," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "We backed down defensively just a little bit and to Calvin's credit, they took advantage. They hit some huge shots when they needed them, just like what happened to us against Olivet on Saturday. But, we came out and battled tonight and we can build on this effort."

The Knights came out strong in the first half and held a 21-11 lead at the 14:06 mark of the first half before the Scots fought back and tied the game at 28-28 on a three-pointer by Jr. G Chris Williamson (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville) with 7:22 left in the half.

Alma outscored Calvin by a margin of 23-15 for the rest of the half and took a 51-43 lead into the break. The visitors hit nine of 16 three-pointers to get that advantage and finished with a 59% shooting percentage in the first frame.

The game remained close throughout the second half, but Alma held a 84-77 lead with 3:13 to go when Jr. G Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) connected on a lay-up. Calvin then went on a 11-4 run to tie the game at 88-88 and send it into overtime.

The extra frame was a tight affair as well, but the Knights were able to outscore the Scots 12-11 and win the game by a point. Sr. G Cory Schneider (Carson City, Mich./CC-Crystal) led Alma with 27 points, as he hit seven three pointers (on 12 attempts), tying a school record. After tonight's game, Schneider now has 65 three point baskets on the season, also tying a school record.

The Scots will travel to Adrian College on Saturday to take on the Bulldogs beginning at 3:00 p.m.
