The Alma College Men's basketball team, looking for their third consecutive victory, hit the road on Wednesday night with a game at Kalamazoo College. But the team came away on the short end of a 75-70 decision, and the Scots now have a record of 2-5 in the MIAA and 6-12 overall, while the host Hornets finished play with a mark of 2-5 in the league and 7-11 for the 2011-12 season.
"We did not play with the 40 minute effort required to get a road conference win," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "We played hard for 30 minutes and we did a nice job of getting back into the game. But we could not do enough to finish after burying ourselves earlier in the game."
It was a very competitive first half and the Scots forged a six-point advantage at 18-12, when Sr. G Cory Schneider (Carson City, Mich./CC-Crystal) hit a three-pointer at the 12:40 mark. But, Alma played an uneven first 20 minutes, and two separate 10-0 runs by the Hornets resulted in the home team having a 41-34 lead at halftime.
Greg Silverthorn led Alma with 16 points in a loss to Kalamazoo on Wednesday evening
Kalamazoo took an 11-point lead on three occasions in the second half, the last being 63-52 with 8:56 left in the game. But the Scots used a 14-3 run to tie the contest at 66-66 on a lay-up by Jr. G Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) with 3:47 left in the game.
However, after another tie at 68-68 with just over two minutes remaining, the Hornets finished the game on a 7-2 run to come away with the 75-70 home court league victory.
Chris Williamson finished with 13 points and three assists against the Hornets
Silverthorn led the team with 16 points, while Jr. G Chris Williamson (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville) had 13 and Schneider added 12 for the team in the losing effort. So. F Sam Clancy (Port Austin, Mich./North Huron) was also in double figures with 10 points on the evening.
