On Tuesday evening, the Scots' Men's Basketball team started their 2011-12 season, under new Head Coach Sam Hargraves, on the road at Division II Lake Superior State and dropped a hard-fought 83-74 decision to an undefeated Lakers squad.
Alma will take a 0-1 record into this weekend's MIAA/WHAC Challenge at UM-Dearborn on Friday and Saturday. The Scots will play Dearborn at 8:15 p.m. on Friday and then take on Madonna University at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The Scots held their own for most of the first half and had a lead of 13-10 eight minutes into the contest. However, LSSU connected on a three-pointer and then took the lead for good two minutes later. The Lakers had the halftime advantage of 39-28, as they shot 41% (12 of 29), while the Scots were good on 48% of their attempts (11-25), including six of 14 from three-point land.
Jr. Greg Silverthorn led the Scots on Tuesday with 17 points, including five three-pointers
Lake Superior State achieved their biggest lead of 21 points three minutes into the second half, but the feisty Scots were not going to go away. Alma cut the lead to nine, when Jr. G Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) hit a three and knocked it down to eight, at 70-62, when Jr. F Tyler DeLap (Carson City, Mich./Carson City-Crystal) connected on a three-pointer with 8:36 remaining in the game.
As hard as they tried however, the visitors could never make it a two possession game, as the closest they came was at 76-69 with 1:28 left on the clock after a three-pointer by DeLap. In the end, Silverthorn led the team with 17 points, as he was five of 11 from beyond the arc.
In addition, DeLap was next for Alma with 15 points, connecting on five of eight three point attempts, while Jr. G Chris Williamson (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville) finished with 14 points. He connected on six of eight shots and contributed five rebounds. So. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) led the Scots with five assists on the evening.
