Men's Hoops traveled to Olivet on Wednesday evening and lost by five, 91-86

On Wednesday evening, the Alma College Men's Basketball team traveled to Olivet for an MIAA contest. Both teams will be looking for their first league win of the season, and the Comets were able to come away with a 91-86 victory. The Scots are now 0-3 in the MIAA and 4-10 overall. The Comets improved to 1-2 in league play and 3-11 for the 2011-12 season.

"We played okay in spurts tonight and had a chance to win the game," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "I was a bit surprised that we were as close given our problems from a rebounding standpoint, and we need to find a way to come out of these situations with a win."

The Comets jumped on the visitors early and led by 11 points, at 31-20, with 8:29 remaining in the first half. However, the Scots went on an 18-5 run and took their first lead at 3:41, when Sr. F Tommy Erickson (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) put in a lay-up.

Alma built a lead of six points before Olivet would take a late lead in the half at 45-44. But, Sr. G Cory Schneider (Carson City, Mich./CC-Crystal) would connect on a three-pointer with five seconds remaining, sending the visitors into the locker room with a 47-45 lead.

On this night though, the Comets were determined to earn their first league win and came out with a 19-4 run in the first six minutes of the half. It gave them a lead at 64-51 and the home team would ride that to the eventual win.

The Scots fought valiantly and chipped away at the disadvantage on several occasions, only to see the Comets answer. A Schneider free throw cut the deficit to 89-86 with 1:27 left in the game, but two Olivet shots from the charity stripe closed out the victory.

Schneider hit five three-pointers and led the Scots with 20 points, while Erickson added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jr. G Dustin DeShais (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) tallied 12 points in the loss.

Alma will host Calvin College on Saturday afternoon at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
