The Alma College Men's Basketball team, playing against host UM-Dearborn in the first game of the MIAA-WHAC Challenge, earned their first victory of season on Friday evening. Alma defeated the Wolves by a score of 77-73 to even their record to 1-1 on the season. The Scots will take on Madonna at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday in the second game of the challenge.
The Scots led by a score of 36-31 at halftime after a 44% shooting effort and things looked bright for the visitors heading into the final 20 minutes. However, the hometown Wolves were a game opponent on this evening and would not make it easy for the visitors.
Alma earned an 11-point lead at 48-37 with 15:21 left in the game, when Fr. G Malcolm Thurmond (Middlebury, Mich./Northridge) connected on a jumper. However, the Wolves went on a 18-6 run over the next 4:44 to take a 55-54 lead with 10:02 remaining in the game.
The game remained a one or two possession game the rest of the way and Dearborn had the lead at the 1:48 mark. However, a field goal by So. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) put the Scots ahead for good. Two free throws by Jr. F Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) sealed the win for the Scots.
Dustin DeShais led the Scots with 13 points in win over Dearborn on Friday evening
Jr. G Dustin DeShais (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) led the Scots with 13 points on four of four shooting from the field (one for one from beyond the arc) and also connected on all four attempted free throws. Silverthorn was next with 12 points, while adding four assists. So. F Sean Clancy (Port Austin, Mich./North Huron) led Alma with eight rebounds and had eight points, while Jr. G Chris Williamson (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville) contributed a game-high five assists along with six points.
