Alma Ends Season with Dismantling of Finlandia

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College football team wrapped up the season with a 46-0 victory over Finlandia University on Saturday (Nov. 16). The program recognized its 25-member senior class prior to the game.

Alma scored on its first three offensive drives while earning a safety, a fumble recovery, and a 10-minute drive the ended in a turnover on downs on its first three defensive possessions. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) found Chase Krueger (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) for a nine-yard score, then connected with Joseph Schaefer (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) on fourth down from 16 yards out.

The Scots would continue to put pressure on Finlandia in the second half when Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) made a spectacular touchdown run when he stiff-armed two defenders, juked another and dove for the pylon to put Alma up 25-0. He found Schaefer for a 10-yard score two possessions later.

Stevens finished 8-of-11 for 77 yards and two touchdowns on three drives. Travis Disser (Marysville, Mich. / Marysville) also saw time at quarterback, connecting on one pass and rushing three times for 13 yards.

Five Scots had at least four carries and eight Scots had at least two. Dontae Burks (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall Senior High School) led the ground game with 67 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown run, on just five carries. Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich. / Concord) had the two longest plays of the day: a 32-yard run on a jet sweep and a 77-yard punt return touchdown. Ippel had 65 yards on six rushes and one score.

Schaefer led the team in receiving with four catches for 48 yards and two scores. Krueger caught three balls for 25 yards and one touchdown. Samuel Jacob (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West Senior) had one catch for seven yards; it was the first catch of his career.

Alma totaled seven sacks on Lions quarterback Darin Johnson. Odin Soffredine (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West Senior High School) had 1.5 sacks in addition to seven tackles. Joel Collinson (Lansing, Mich. / Lansing Catholic), Stephen White and Drew Marshall (St. Ignace, Mich. / LaSalle) each had one and four others each had 0.5. Jack Lawrence (Byron, Mich. / Byron Area) led the team with eight tackles. Zeke Ramirez (Homer, Mich. / Homer) forced and recovered a fumble and Aleck Frederick (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake High School) secured his first career interception.

Also finding the stat sheet for the first time this season: Bryce Kita (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) with two catches for 14 yards; Vernonell Smith Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / North Muskegon) with one rush for five yards; and Tom Truong (Safety Harbor, Fla. / Countryside) with four extra points and a 21-yard field goal.

This concludes the 2019 season for the Scots. They finish with a record of 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the MIAA, a three-game improvement in its conference record from 2018. The team will graduate 25 seniors.
