Adrian, Mich. - The Alma College football team fell to Adrian College 34-31 on Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon. Alma is now 4-2 and 2-1 in the MIAA while Adrian improves to 3-3 and 2-1.
The Scots took advantage of multiple short fields Adrian awarded to them, scoring 17 points on drives less than 50 yards. Alma took a 24-20 lead early in the fourth quarter when Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich. / Concord) found Jarrett Bright (Flint, Mich. / Genesee) with a seven-yard pass on a trick play. Adrian would score two straight touchdowns, the second one taking 7:18 off the clock to put the Bulldogs up 24-34 with 2:37 remaining. Alma answered with a seven-play, 55-yard touchdown drive to pull to within three but did not recover the ensuing onside kick.
The Scots had 119 rushing yards in the game, their fewest since the opening game of the year against Baldwin Wallace. Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) led the team with 36 yards and two touchdowns, Dustin Soloman (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota High School) had 32 yards on five carries and Hinkle posted 26 rushing yards. Ippel also threw for 95 yards. Austin Spratling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Wyoming Kelloggsville) had seven carries for 16 yards.
Chase Krueger (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) led Alma in receiving with 25 yards on three receptions. Bright and Hinkle each caught two passes for 24 yards. Joseph Schaefer (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) and Nathan Goralski (Romeo, Mich. / Romeo High School) also had one reception, each.
Adrian's Jack Wurzer threw for 403 yards and four touchdowns. The Scots picked him off once – it was returned for a touchdown by Max Kretzschmar (Marine City, Mich. / Marine City). Henry Wilson caught seven passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Donald Scott also caught two touchdowns.
The two teams traded the lead six times until Adrian went up by ten late in the fourth. Alma's first score was the interception return by Kretzschmar to begin the second quarter. After forcing a three-and-out on Adrian's next drive and benefiting from a five-yard punt, Alma faced a 4th & 2 at the Bulldogs' eight-yard line – Spratling was stopped in the backfield.
The Scots got a defensive stop again on Adrian's next drive when Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) recovered a fumble forced by Zeke Ramirez (Homer, Mich. / Homer) at the Adrian 40-yard line. Zach Clements (Clarkston, Mich. / Brandon) converted a 20-yard field goal to give the Scots their first lead. Alma again took advantage of a short field after a blocked punt by Dontae Burks (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall Senior High School) when Ippel scored from the one-yard line in four plays.
The Scots return to Bahlke Field next Saturday (Oct. 26) when they host Kalamazoo College. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
