Six Scots named STUNT All-Americans

Alma, Mich. -  Six student-athletes from the Alma College cheerleading and STUNT team have been named All-Americans by the College STUNT Association for 2018, it was announced recently by USA Cheer.

The Scots, which finished as the runner-up in the Division II College Stunt Association National Championship and posted a 16-4 record during the 2018 campaign, placed five athletes on the First Team, including: senior Dom Burke (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East), sophomore Jessica Hatcher (Richmond, Mich./Richmond), junior Jilian Jegla (Westphalia, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia), senior Erica Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland) and sophomore Gabby Saum (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood).

Sophomore Olivia Manke (Jackson, Mich./Michigan Center) was the lone representative on the Second Team.

The STUNT All Americans were selected by a committee of coaches from various regions along with several STUNT officials. Nominees for All American are athletes who exhibited superior skills and techniques, good game sense and knowledge of STUNT. They also needed to have participated in at least half of the games or tournaments for at least 50 percent of the routines.

"We are so impressed with the athleticism and enthusiasm of our STUNT All Americans this year," says Lauri Harris, Executive Director of USA Cheer. "They contributed greatly to the success of their teams and represented our sport as strong, well rounded athletes. We are grateful for the dedication of these fine athletes and know that it's helping with the growing popularity of the sport as they inspire young women across the US."

Women's STUNT, the new varsity sport derived from cheerleading launched by USA Cheer, has just finished its eighth season at the college level and seventh for high school. With more than 80 colleges having already participated over the past eight seasons, and high schools from over 10 states already on board, STUNT is the fastest growing girls sport in the country. Developed to meet the requirements of a sport under Title IX, girls STUNT takes the athletic skills of cheerleading—like jumps, stunts and tumbling—and creates a full game format that challenges teams to head-to-head competition.

"We have witnessed tremendous growth in the sport of STUNT over the last eight years," says Bill Boggs, Director of College STUNT. "With each new season, we see a greater interest in the sport, and an expansion of opportunities for female athletes. We appreciate the coaches and ADs that have embraced our new sport, as well as the athletes who have exceled in this new format."
