Alma, Mich. - The Alma College cheer team won its division at the Alma College Invite on Sunday (March 19) at Art Smith Arena. The Scots scored 93.5 points to top the Intermediate All-Girl Division, which consisted of Alma, Michigan State and Grand Valley State.
Alma received only one deduction in its routine, which was altered 15 minutes prior to the competition due to an injury to one of the team members.
"Overall, it was the strongest debut performance in program history," Head Coach Michelle Sabourin said. "The girls have worked extremely hard on preparing this routine and are excited to keep improving on it as we move closer to nationals."
In addition to winning the division, junior McKenna Clark (Pierson, Mich./Tri County), sophomore Julia Mocere (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores), senior Jade Paquin (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport) and freshman Gabby Saum (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) won the lib contest against teams from all the participating schools.
Davenport University won the All-Girl Advanced Division, while Grand Valley State University. won the Co-ed Division.
The Scots will travel to Allendale, Mich., on Sunday, March 26, to participate in the Laker Cheer Invitational, which is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start on the campus of Grand Valley State University. Alma will return to Art Smith Arena on Saturday, April 1, for a send-off performance and alumni event before traveling to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the NCA National competition.
