Carol Stream, Ill. - The Alma College baseball team fell in its opening game at the Wheaton College Invitational on Friday (March 16) afternoon, dropping a 10-0 decision to Aurora University (IL) in eight innings.
The Scots (5-3 overall) were limited to six hits and were held scoreless for the first time this season. Sophomore Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) led Alma with a pair of hits, including a double, while on the mound, sophomore Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren) threw five innings and struck out six of the 23 batters he faced.
Aurora improved to 9-3 overall behind Jett Wedekind's 3-for-4 performance, which included a pair of doubles. The Spartans' Kyle Blunt fanned 11 Scots in seven innings to earn the victory.
How It Happened
- Aurora scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, then added two more in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch.
- The Spartans pulled away in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs, including back-to-back RBI doubles. Aurora ended the game in the bottom of the eighth after an RBI single by Kyle MacFarlane gave the Spartans a 10-run lead.
Alma will face St. Mary's College (MN) and host Wheaton College (IL) to wrap up play in the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, March 17. First pitch against the Cardinals is set for Noon ET, while the Scots and Thunder will take the field at 3 p.m. ET.
