Alma, Mich. - Sophomore Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren) has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today (Monday, March 12) by the league office.
Riggs pitched a complete-game shutout on Sunday (March 11) against Hanover College (IN), fanning a season-high eight batters in the Scots 2-0 Game 1 victory. In addition to his first win of the season, the performance was Riggs' first career shutout. Riggs faced 29 batters and threw 98 pitches, 76 of which were strikes.
For the season, Riggs is 1-0 with a 1.71 earned-run average in three starts. He has thrown a MIAA-best 16 strikeouts and has pitched 21 innings, the most by any hurler in the league.
This is the second straight week a member of the Scots has been honored by the MIAA. Sophomore Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) received Player of the Week accolades on March 5.
Alma (5-2 overall) will travel to Carol Stream, Ill., this weekend to participate in the Wheaton College Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 16-17. The Scots will face Aurora University (IL) on Friday, followed by games against St. Mary's University (MN) and the host Thunder on Saturday.
