Alma, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team split a home doubleheader against Kalamazoo College on Saturday (April 29) at Klenk Park to close out a four-game series with the Hornets. The Scots (12-24 overall, 10-14 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) won Game 1 by a 4-3 margin before falling in the series finale, 8-4.
With one series remaining in the regular-season, Alma sits two games out of fourth place and is tied with Trine University for fifth place in the standings. The Scots and Thunder are chasing Calvin College (18-18, 12-12 MIAA) for the final spot in the MIAA Tournament, which begins on May 11. Calvin will play Kalamazoo in the final weekend, while Trine takes on Albion College.
Senior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher) recorded a team-high four hits on the day and tallied a team-best three RBIs, while junior Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) pitched 7.2 innings over two games.
The Scots will face Olivet College to close out the regular season, traveling to Olivet, Mich., for a doubleheader on Friday, May 5, before closing out the series on Saturday, May 6, with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Klenk Park.
Game 1 - at Alma 4, Kalamazoo 3
The Scots snapped a five-game skid with the come-from behind victory, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for the second time in the game.
After Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Alma scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to gain a 2-1 advantage. Freshman Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich./Standish-Sterling) crossed the plate on an error, then junior Austin Roeske (Warren, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) hit an RBI double to score junior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate).
The Hornets took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs before Alma responded in the bottom half of the inning. Adam Thoryk hit an RBI double to score freshman Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant/Davenport), then Koin scored senior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) on the next at bat with a sacrifice fly.
Eric Frontzak picked up the win, entering the game in the sixth inning in relief of freshman Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren), who struck out three batters and allowed two hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Game 2 - Kalamazoo 8, at Alma 4
The Hornets closed out the series by scoring twice in the top of the seventh and eighth innings to break a 4-4 tie and pull away for the win.
Alma led, 4-2, after two innings, scoring three times in the bottom of the second. Alex Peczynski hit a two-RBI double in the frame, while Adam Thoryk tallied his second RBI of the game to put Alma up by a pair of runs.
Kalamazoo tied the game in the top of the fifth with a pair of scores.
Eric Fronztak took the loss, pitching 6.1 innings as the starter before the bullpen rook over in the seventh inning.
