Adrian, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team was swept on Friday (April 14) on the road as he Scots opened a four-game series with defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Adrian College at Nicolay Field. The Scots (8-18, 6-8 MIAA) fell in Game 1, 6-5, after a late rally was cut short, while the Bulldogs (20-6, 13-1 MIAA) took Game 2, 6-3.
Freshman Jaret Koin (Standish, Mich./Standish Sterling) finished the day with a team-high six hits, going 3-for-4 in the series opener before a 3-for-4 outing with a RBI in Game 2.
At the halfway point of the league season, Alma sits in fifth place, two games behind Kalamazoo College, Hope College and Trine University, all of which are tied for second place. The Bulldogs hold a five-game lead over the rest of the MIAA with 14 games to play. The top four teams at the end of the season qualify for the MIAA Tournament.
Alma will host Adrian on Saturday, April 15, to close out the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Klenk Park.
Game 1 - at Adrian 6, Alma 5
Adrian took a 6-0 lead after four innings, but the Scots rallied, scoring five runs in the top of the sixth to pull within one run.
The Scots got on the scoreboard when senior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) scored on a fielder's choice, then senior Patrick Finn (Allenton, Mich./Almont) scored on a RBI double by junior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate). Freshman Vann Acker did the rest of the damage at the next at bat, hitting a three-run homer for his first career home run.
Alma put runners at the corners with one out in the top of the seventh, but junior Ben Finzel (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley/USC Salkehatchie) grounded into a double play to end the game.
Peczynski and Jared Koin each finished the game with three hits, while senior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher) went 2-for-4.
Senior Alex Valasek (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) pitched a complete game, striking out five batters.
Game 2 - at Adrian 6, Alma 3
Goffee hit the first run home in the top of the third inning, scoring freshman Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant/Davenport) with a RBI triple. Finn hit his first career home run to give the Scots a run in the top of the seventh, then Koin added Alma's final run when he hit an RBI single to score Adam Thoryk.
Senior Mike Mallory (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca) got the start on the mound and threw for six innings, recording a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Garrett Miller (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West/Mott CC) finished the game with two innings of relief, giving up only two hits.
