Alma College Wrestling Team
Now in its second season as a varsity sport, the Alma College wrestling team is proving that success is not reserved for veteran programs. Under head coach, Todd Hibbs, the Scots are accomplishing goals and building the foundation needed to be a top program both statewide and in the nation.
“As a program, our mentality is to go from contenders to competitors to champions. Now in our second year, we’re hoping to progress to where we are putting guys on the podium and collecting some hardware,” said Hibbs.
In their first meet of the season, the Scots faced Niagara County Community College (NY) - a team that ranks 12th in the nation among community colleges in wrestling. Hard-nosed and relentless was Alma, defeating Niagara by a score of 30-12. The team let the momentum from their first meet propel them to a convincing 54-0 win in their next meet over Triton College (IL).
The very next day, many of the Scots competed in the Muskegon Open and three champions were crowned: Fr. Caleb Huff (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) at 149 pounds, So. Jared Groeneveld (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) at 184 pounds and Fr. Adam Robinson (Mason, Mich./Mason) at heavyweight. Additionally, six Scots earned top four finishes in the open.
“We have double the athletes we had in our first season and we are thrilled with how talented and deep our freshman class is and how that shapes our future,” commented Hibbs.
It’s certainly clear that the future looks bright for Alma College Wrestling. A batch of talented newcomers combined with a strong returning roster means great things are in store this 2012-13 season.
