Softball Goes 2-3 at NFCA Leadoff Classic

The Scots started slow but finished hot in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz., last week. Alma lost its first three games but won its last two and had its sixth scheduled game cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) picked up a win and a save in 7.2 innings pitched. Daniella Little (Wheaton, Ill. / Glenbard South) also earned a win, her fourth of the season. Becca Spenner (Berrien Center, Mich. / Lakeshore) hit her first home run of the season in Alma's most notable win: a 7-6 victory over George Fox University (OR) on the tournament's final day. Alma spotted the Bruins four runs over the first two innings but Spenner tied the game in the third with a three-run dinger. Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) and Madyson Piche (Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) drove in three more runs in the later innings.

Baseball Goes 3-0 Over the Weekend

The baseball team swept Wilmington College (OH) in a three-game series. Dylan Dzendzel (Royal Oak, Mich. / Royal Oak) improved his record on the mound to 4-0 in game one. Game two got delayed due to darkness in the seventh inning and finished the next day. Macguire Hawley (Brooklyn, Mich. / Tecumseh) got the first win of his career in a game that went into extra innings. Aaron Saenz (Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville-Sebewaing Area) got his first win of the season in game three as the Scots mercied the Quakers 17-7. Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich. / Standish-Sterling Central) had three doubles in the game. Zach Schirmer (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western / Delta College) and Alex Dwan (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) both had six RBIs in the Series, Pete Carravallah (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth / Adrian College) had five.

Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Heidelberg

The Alma College men's lacrosse team held off the Heidelberg University Student Princes on Saturday (Mar. 7) at Bahlke Field by a final score of 13-10. Alma trailed 5-4 at the half but was able to outscore the Student Princes 9-5 in the second half to earn the victory. The Scots were led by senior Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) who scored five goals on 10 shots. Fellow senior Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio / University School) scored three goals while leading the Scots with four assists. Alma trailed by one at the half but outdid the Student Princes in the third quarter. Hunyadi factored in on all five goals, scored twice and assisting on three others. Tommy Quinlan (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl J. Sandberg) had three points in the fourth quarter as Alma netted a few insurance goals.

Women's Lacrosse Shuts Down Hiram

The women's lacrosse team dominated Hiram College (OH) 14-5 on Friday (Feb. 6) evening in the heavy snow. The game was called with 12 minutes remaining due to extreme conditions. Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) led the Scots with four goals; she added four draw controls. Emma Keith (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) scored a season-high three goals. Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) made ten saves in goal. The Scots pulled away late in the first half. Keith broke a 3-3 tie with eight minutes remaining to open the flood gates. Alma scored six of the last seven goals of the half, including one by Pullen with 18 seconds left.
