Cooper and Ladd Advance to Nationals

The wrestling team competed at the NCAA Division lll Regional Central tournament at Adrian College over the weekend where the top three finishers in each weight class qualify for the NCAA Dlll National Tournament. Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) and Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) both did so, Cooper placing second in the 149 weight class and Ladd placing third in the 141 weight class. Chase Beecher (Clio, Mich. / Clio) placed fifth in the 125 weight class.

Softball Goes 8-0 to Open Season

Alma won all eight of its games in Clermont, Fla., over spring break, three of them coming in five innings. The Scots are slugging .618 and are averaging 10.5 runs per game, led by senior Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich. / Coleman) and sophomore Hannah Fleming (Rogers City, Mich. / Rogers City) who are slugging .897 and .731 respectively. Sophomore Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) and freshman Daniella Little (Wheaton, Ill. / Glenbard South) are each 3-0 in the circle while Skylar Crisenbery (Watervliet, Mich. / Coloma) has Alma's other two wins. Little leads the team with 14 strikeouts and a 0.47 ERA; Crisenbery is right behind her with 11 K's and an 0.78 ERA.

Men's Basketball Bounced from MIAA Tournament

The men's basketball team fell to Trine University (IN) in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday (Feb. 25) evening, 82-79. Neither team claimed more than an eight-point lead in the contest. There were seven ties and 15 lead changes in the game. Alma outscored Trine in the second half after struggling to find its stroke in the first but the Thunder went ahead with under three minutes remaining. Alma hung tough and found itself down three with under 30 seconds remaining. Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) had an open look at a 30-footer as time expired but it was no good. Kleiver led the Scots with 21 points; he made all 10 of his free throws. Zach Sinke (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) had 16 points on six made shots. Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) finished with eight points and seven boards. Harvey had six rebounds and four assists. The Scots finish with an overall record of 13-12, a conference record of 7-7, and have made the MIAA postseason six times in the last seven years.

Women's Basketball Falls to Calvin in MIAA Tournament

The women's basketball team fell to Calvin University 70-50 on Wednesday (Feb. 26) evening in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. They finish with an overall record of 12-14, a conference record of 7-9 and have made the MIAA playoffs in each of the last two seasons. Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) led the Scots with 14 points and eight rebounds, including 10 points in the fourth. Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo-Westphalia) had nine points, four rebounds and two assists. Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) finished with eight points, six rebounds and one assist.

Baseball Wraps up RussMat Tournament

Alma finished the RussMatt Tournament in Auburndale, Fla., with a record of 4-4, including wins of 20-7 and 15-5. After the week of games and through 11 games overall, Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) leads the team in batting average and on base percentage with .520 and .613, respectively. Dylan Dzendzel (Royal Oak, Mich. / Royal Oak) is 3-0 and leads the team with 23 strikeouts. Senior Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich. / Johannesburg-Lewiston) has six home runs while freshman Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich. / Woodhaven) and senior Zach Schirmer (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) each have two. Huff leads the team in slugging percentage and RBIs with .971 and 20, respectively. Of pitchers who have pitched 10 or more innings, Aaron Saenz (Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville-Sebewaing Area) leads the team with a 3.60 ERA. As a team, the Scots have a batting average of .359, on base percentage of .466, and a slugging percentage of .529.

Track and Field Wraps Up MIAA Indoor Season

The track and field team competed in the MIAA Indoor Field Day on Saturday (Jan. 29) in the final conference meet of the indoor season. Bailey Hoffman (Olivet, Mich. / Olivet) finished third in the women's weight throw with a distance of 14.95 meters on her last throw. Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) finished seventh with a distance of 13.50 meters. Hoffman also finished seventh in the shot put, behind Hengesbach who finished fourth. Hengesbach threw for 12.12 meters; Hoffman came in at 11.47 meters. Sophie Patrick also threw 11.47 meters but came in just behind Hoffman in the seeding. Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) finished third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.58. Vernonell Smith (Muskegon, Mich. / North Muskegon) finished fourth with a time of 8.99, improving three spots from the preliminaries.

Men's Lacrosse Comes up Short to Illinois Wesleyan

The men's lacrosse team fell to Illinois Wesleyan 24-11 on Saturday (Feb. 29). Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) had five goals and one assist. Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio / University School) tallied five points with two goals and three assists. Levi Petersen (Holt, Mich. / Holt) also scored twice. Hank Wickley (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) made 12 saves in goal. The Scots had a game against Concordia University of Chicago originally scheduled for Thursday (Feb. 27) canceled due to weather.
