Football Stuns Albion with Enormous Fourth Quarter
The football team erased a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit against Albion College to win 32-28 on Saturday (Oct. 5) afternoon. The Scots (3-1, 1-0) outgained Albion 201-26 in the fourth quarter and scored touchdowns on their last three possessions to earn their first win over the Britons since 2016 and their second in the last nine years. Quarterback Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) scored the game-winning 35-yard touchdown on a designed quarterback draw. Alma outrushed Albion 291-170 on the day. Stevens and running back Austin Spratling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Wyoming Kelloggsville) each posted double-digit carries; Stevens ran for a career-best 108 yards and two touchdowns. Spratling was also the team's leading receiver with four catches for 78 yards and one touchdown; he had a career-high 152 yards from scrimmage. Alma forced three Albion turnovers including two in the fourth quarter.
Women's Tennis Beats Defiance, Butterfield Earns Athlete of the Week
The women's tennis team defeated Defiance College 8-1 on Saturday (Oct. 5) from the Superior Street Tennis Courts. The Scots only dropped one singles match on the day and won all three doubles matches. Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) earned a singles victory, while Amanda Szymborski and Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) earned a doubles win for the Scots. On Monday (Sept. 30) Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) was announced as the conference's Athlete of the Week. The junior was a key factor in the Scots' victory over Albion on Saturday (Sept. 27), winning her doubles match 8-1 and her singles match in three sets.
Rajewski Scores Hat Trick, Women's Soccer plays on Bahlke Field
Makenzie Rajewski (Midland, Mich. / Midland) scored Alma College women's soccer's first hat trick in five seasons in the team's 3-1 win over Trine University (IN) on Tuesday (Oct. 1) evening. Rajewski first scored in the 11th minute off an assist by Lily Stephan (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt High School), then in the 51st minute and again in the 59th. She only took four shots in the game and the three that were on goal all scored. On Friday (Oct. 4), the Scots hosted Adrian College at Bahlke Field due to poor field conditions at Scotland Yard. Dakota Booher scored her first career goal in the 71st minute off a free-kick, but Alma fell 2-1.
XC Men Finished Third, Hemstreet Places 13th at Lansing Invitational
The men's cross country team finished third and the women finished tenth at the Lansing Invitational on Friday (Oct. 4). Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central), Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich. / Oscoda Area), Karl Stroup (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) and Timothy Carlington (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac Senior High School) all finished in the top 20 point-getters on the men's side and were four of 11 men to set new personal records. Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) placed 13th among 175 women to finish the women's race. She ran a 19:10.5 5k, one-and-a-half seconds off her college best. Eight women broke their previous PRs in the race.
Volleyball Travels to Millikin for a Trio of Non-Conference Games
The volleyball team went 1-2 at the Millikin University Fall Triangular last weekend. Alma fell 3-0 to Coe College (IA) on Friday (Oct. 4), defeated Simpson College (IA) 3-1 and fell 3-0 to Millikin University (IL) on Saturday (Oct. 5). Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) led the Scots (10-7) with nine kills on Friday; Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) was right behind with eight and a .583 kill percentage. Ullrich led the Scots with 19 combined kills in two Saturday matches. Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) was close behind with 17 followed by Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) with 16. Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) had a total of 75 assists over all three games; Bailey Cantrell (Holt, Mich. / Mason) led with 47 digs. Alma hit .317 in the win over Simpson, led by Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin High School) with a .429 kill percentage and Ullrich with .391. The Scots had at least a dozen kills in all four sets and enjoyed a comfortable eight-point win average over three sets.
Women's Golf Looking for Fourth-Place Spot
Alma played both MIAA Jamborees three and four last week; the Scots finished in eighth on Wednesday (Oct. 2) and fourth on Thursday (Oct. 3). Junior Grace Grelak (Canton, Mich. / Salem) led the Scots on Wednesday with an 86. Ava Gardiner (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) led the Scots on Thursday with an 84. Alma is currently in seventh place in the conference – 44 strokes behind fourth-place Calvin – with two rounds of the Fall Final left. Round one begins on Friday (Oct. 11).
Men's Golf's Fall Season Comes to a Close
The men's golf team concluded its fall season on Saturday (Oct. 5) in the second and last round of the MIAA Fall Final. The Scots finished with a two-round score of 646 at the Forest Akers West Golf Course. Freshman Andrew Curran (Byron Center, Mich. / Jenison) led the Scots with a two-day score of 156 and finished in a tie for 23rd place. Eli Pinter (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) and Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich. / Big Rapids) both shot 161 and tied for 29th.
Men's Soccer Struggles Against Hope
The Alma College men's soccer team struggled against Hope College in a 4-0 loss on Wednesday (Oct. 2). The Flying Dutch came out immediately aggressive. Ryan Flynn, with the assistance of Nic Kubert, scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute. Hope continued to apply pressure and scored two more goals in the first half. The Flying Dutch added another goal in the 89th minute. Senior Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) tallied a total of eight saves in the game; he now has 58 on the year, the second most in the MIAA.
