Football Runs All Over Manchester

The football team earned its first win of the year with a 35-7 triumph over Manchester University (IN) on Saturday (Sept. 14). The Scots (1-1) outrushed Manchester 281-160 behind a balanced attack. Junior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) had 63 yards, freshman Dustin Soloman (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota High School) had 53 yards and one touchdown and three others each had over 30 yards on fewer than eight carries. Senior Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich. / Concord) had one rushing touchdown and one punt return touchdown while junior Steven Sowa (Allen Park, Mich. / St. Frances Cabrini) also scored on the ground. In all, Alma outgained the Spartans 479-261 in the all-around victory.

Majerle Reaches 500 Kills

Volleyball played five non-conference games last week, going 3-2 overall. Sophomore Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) reached the 500 kill mark after posting 25 in a 3-1 win over Elmhurst College (IL) on Saturday (Sept. 14) at the DePauw University Tiger Invitational. She was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging over 15 kills in Alma's four matches.

Women's Golf Tied for Second After First MIAA Jamboree

Alma is tied for second place with Hope College after the first MIAA Jamboree on Saturday (Sept. 14). The Scots' top three golfers all shot under 83: freshman Morgan Yates (Shepherd, Mich. / Shepherd High School) posted an 82 and both senior Jennifer Kowalczyk (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and sophomore Ava Gardiner (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Adlai E. Stevenson) had 83s. Alma sits 22 strokes behind defending champion Saint Mary's (IN) for first place with three Jamborees to go.

Offensive Youth Continues to Lead Women's Soccer

Sophomore Lexi Russell (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston High School) was named MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday (Sept. 9) after scoring two goals against Mount St. Joseph. She added another in Alma's 2-0 win over Franklin College (IN) on Sunday (Sept. 15); sophomore Ashley Oldham (Gilbert, Ariz. / Chandler Basha) had the other score. Freshman Lily Stephan (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt High School) tied the Scots up at one goal apiece with Anderson University (IN) on Saturday (Sept. 14), leading to a 1-1 tie. Russell leads the Scots with four goals on the year; Stephan is right behind with three.

Pinter, Curran Pace Men's Golf

The Scots played three rounds of golf last week, one of which was the first MIAA Jamboree. Alma finished seventh in that tournament with a score of 334. Sophomore Eli Pinter (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) shot a team-low 80 at the Wuskowhan Players Club that day with freshman Andrew Curran (Byron Center, Mich. / Jenison High School) close behind. Later in the week, the Scots finished 12th at the Irish Hills Invitational. They were led by Curran with a 165, including a 76 in the second round.

Women's Tennis Shuts Down Concordia Ann Arbor

Alma defeated Concordia University Ann Arbor 8-1 on Saturday (Sept. 14). Sophomore Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill. Downers Grove) and senior Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) led the way on the singles side while Rachel Moran won her first collegiate match 6-0, 6-0.

Men's Tennis Handles Concordia Ann Arbor

The Scots won all but two matches against Concordia University Ann Arbor on Saturday (Sept. 14). Junior Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. Cadillac) and sophomore Brendan Murdie (Novi, Mich. Walled Lake Western) each won in three sets while seniors Brett Reuter (Armada, Mich. Armada) and David Suidgeest (St. Johns, Mich. / St. Johns) won in straight sets.
