Nycz Hits 300 Points as Men's Lacrosse Earns Conference Win
The men's lacrosse team was on the road for two MIAA games this week. The Scots defeated Kalamazoo College Wednesday by a score of 25-11. Senior midfielder Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y. / Iroquois) scored a game-high eight goals and added four assists in the win. Nycz surpassed 300 career points in the game, the first MIAA player to do so. Alma then fell to Albion College, 14-10, on Saturday. Two defenders scored their first collegiate goals: senior Max Linscott (Columbus, Ohio / New Albany) and sophomore Sam Luzar (Midland, Mich. / Midland).
Goggins Breaks Pole Vault Record at Albion
Both the men and women track and field teams finished second in the Albion Tri-Meet on Friday behind the host Britons and ahead of Olivet. Senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) set a new Alma College record in the women's pole vault event, posting a height of 3.50 meters. Junior Aubrey Hemstreet (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) won the women's 3000-meter run with a time of 11:24.78, while sophomore Timothy Minier (Battle Creek, Mich. / St. Philip Catholic Central) and junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw Nouvel) earned wins in the men's 200-meter dash the 800-meter run, respectively.
Benoit Sits on 100 Career Points
The women's lacrosse team fell in two conference games last week, 22-4 to Albion and 17-16 against Trine. Junior Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) led the Scots with seven goals against the Thunder to give her 99 in her career; she can become the fifth player in program history to reach the century mark. Sophomore MacKenzie Chevalier (Fraser, Mich. / International Academy of Macomb) put up a career-best four goals in the game, as well.
Softball Has a Flair for the Dramatic
The softball team split series against Kalamazoo and No. 9 Trine last week. Juniors Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) and Madyson Piche (Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) each hit their first home runs of the season in Alma's 7-2 win over the Hornets while freshman pitcher Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) allowed two runs on five hits, seven strikeouts and just one walk over seven innings. Against the Thunder, senior Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh, a single up the middle that broke a 10-10 tie. Terwilliger finished the series with Trine 4-for-7 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI.
Baseball Plays Tight With Hope
The Scots were swept in a doubleheader at Hope College on Saturday by 7-6 in both games. Senior Jordan Anstandig (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) hit two home runs on the day including a solo blast with Alma down one and facing their final out in the first game. The Flying Dutchmen would win in walk-off fashion in both matchups. Freshman right fielder Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) hit his first career home run and had his first career three-RBI game in game one.
Ralston Picks up Two Wins
The men's tennis team fell in three matches it played in last week: 9-0 to Adrian and 8-1 to both Albion and Trine. Junior Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) scored a hard-earned 7-6 [6-4], 6-2 win over Albion's Josh McGarry in Alma's only singles win of the week. He and Brett Reuter (Armada, Mich. / Armada) defeated Blake and Evan Trusty of Trine 8-2 for Alma's lone victory against the Thunder.
Ross and Garibay Earn Two Doubles Wins
The women's tennis team dropped two matches last week, 7-2 to Adrian and 8-1 to Trine. The team of juniors Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) and Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) earned two doubles wins, 8-4 against the Bulldogs and 8-5 over the Thunder, while sophomore Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) scored a big 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Adrian's Mackenna Crowley.
