Ladd and Cooper Earn All-American Honors at NCAA Championships
Juniors Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) of the Alma College wrestling team fought at the NCAA Division III National Tournament in Roanoke, Virginia this past weekend. Both advanced past Friday's first day of competition with Cooper finishing in fifth place at 149 pounds and Ladd taking seventh at 141 pounds. The two Scots claimed All-American status by being one of the top eight in each class. This was Ladd's second-straight year of earning the All-American honor while Cooper tied the program record for wins in a season with 36 this year.
Benoit Scores Eight Goals, Ray Makes 25 Saves
Junior midfielder Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) scored all eight goals and junior goalie Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) made 25 saves but the Alma College women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-8 decision to Mount St. Joseph University (OH) on Sunday (March 10). Benoit's eight goals are the most in her career and tied for the third-most goals in program history while Ray's save total is tied for the most in her career and was one save shy of the team record. The Scots' earlier game against Hanover was canceled due to inclement weather.
Men's Lacrosse Falls In Two Games
The Scots started their week on the road Thursday at Ohio Wesleyan University. Alma loss, 24-7, with junior attacker Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) scored a hat trick while midfielders Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y. / Iroquois) and Trevor Bailey (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) each added two scores. The then played host to North Central College (IL) on Saturday and dropped a 13-8 contest. Nycz had a team-high four points pushing the senior's program-leading career total to 250.
Scots Drop Two One-Run Games
The Alma College baseball team went down to Lexington, Kentucky to play Transylvania University this weekend. The Scots fell, 5-4, on Saturday and then 15-14 on Sunday. Junior Pete Carravallah knocked in two in Saturday's game while junior Matt Scanzano (Oakville, Ont. / De Las Salles College Oaklands) went three-for-three at the plate and hit his first career home run. Junior Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) also hit a homer but the Scots allowed nine runs in the final two innings to suffer the defeat.
Bowling Ends Season at Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships
The Alma College bowling team competed in the Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) and the Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) sectional qualifier over the weekend (March 8-10). The Scots finished in tenth place out of 16 teams; the top four teams from four nation-wide sectionals make it to the championship. Junior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich. / Hanover Horton) finished 70th in the singles competition where the top eight make it to the championship bracket.
Men's Tennis Earns Sweep of Muskingum
The Scots went 1-1 last week with a 5-4 loss to Manchester and a 9-0 sweep of Muskingum. Sophomore Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) won all four matches he appeared in while junior Jadon House (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) and junior Sam Lindeman (Greenville, Mich. / Greenville) also earned singles wins. Alma is now 3-6 on the season with two non-conference matches left before conference play begins.
Women's Tennis Goes 2-0 Over Weekend
The women's tennis team dropped just one game out of 18 last week as it won its fifth straight match. Sophomore Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland), freshman Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove South) and junior Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) each earned wins. Garibay was one of three Scots to sweep their opponents against Manchester, the others being sophomore Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) and freshman Emily McDonald (Wheeler, Mich. / Bullock Creek).
Dance Takes First Place at the University of Michigan Dance Invitational
The Alma College dance team placed first in both the team and lyrical college divisions on Sunday (March 10) at the University of Michigan Dance Invitational. This is the first time the team has competed regionally and the first time it has competed this early in the season. Alma's next performance is at Arts United on Monday, March 18. The Cheer and Dance Nationals Send-Off show is Saturday, March 30 in Art Smith Arena. National Dance Alliance (NCA) College Nationals is the first week of April in Daytona Beach, Florida.
