Baseball Wins Three In Florida To Start Season

The Scots began their 2019 season last week at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Alma won its season opener against Capital University (OH) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday (Feb. 24). Junior Dylan Dzendel (Royal Oak, Mich. / Royal Oak) earned the win with six shutout innings while junior Aaron Saenz (Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville-Sebewaing) locked down the save in his first appearance at the college level. After falling on Monday and Tuesday, the Scots swept their doubleheader against Lyndon State College (VT) by a score of 5-0 in game one and 13-4 in game two. Freshman Trevor Wregglesworth (Onaway, Mich. / Onaway) pitched a complete game shutout in the first game while Alma scored nine runs in the fourth inning of the second game which included a two-run home run from junior third baseman Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich. /Johannesburg-Lewiston) and an inside-the-park home run from freshman catcher Jayden Drake (Frisco, Texas / Centennial).

Softball Ends Spring Break Trip 6-4

The softball team won six of its last eight games on its spring break trip last week. The Scots have averaged 7.2 runs per game and won three of its six games in fewer than seven innings. Sophomore McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) leads the team in most offensive categories, including batting average (.529), extra-base hits (seven doubles, three home runs), slugging percentage (1.000) and RBI (19). Freshman pitcher Skylar Crisenbery (Watervliet, Mich. / Coloma) leads the team in ERA (2.63) in 24.0 innings pitched, while sophomore Jazmine Hamm (Byron Center, Mich. / Byron Center) has a team-high 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings.

Women's Lacrosse Goes 3-0 on Multi-State Road Trip

The Scots won all three of their games last week, two behind big offensive performances from junior Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North). Benoit scored 14 total goals in the three wins, including a career-high seven in a 16-12 win over Franklin on Saturday (March 2). Earlier in the week, she scored four goals in a 15-3 rout of Waynesburg. Through the first two weeks of the season, Benoit leads the conference in goals (17) and points (19), while junior goalie Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) is first in save percentage (57.1-percent) and saves (44).

Men's Lacrosse Drops One At Home

Junior Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) scored his third-straight hat trick to start the season as the Scots loss, 21-10, to Capital University (OH) on Saturday (Mar. 2) at Bahlke Field. The Scots also received two goals each from senior Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y. / Iroquois), junior Trevor Bailey (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) and freshman Timothy Gearig (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg). Gearig added three assists to lead the team with five points.

Women's Tennis Earns Tight Win Over Defiance

The Scots eked out a 5-4 win over Defiance on Monday (Feb. 25). After dropping the first three singles matches, the Scots (4-3) took the last three and easily won two of three doubles matches to earn the victory. Juniors Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) and Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) both swept their opponents, while freshman Emily McDonald (Wheeler, Mich. / Bullock Creek High School) outlasted Alex St. Julian 7-5, 6-1. Garibay and freshman and Hannan Hakim (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) swept the decisive match.
