Men's Basketball Falls in MIAA Tournament
The men's basketball team dropped an 89-74 decision to Olivet in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday (Feb. 20). The game was within single-digits for the majority of the first half, but the Comets' size and skill became too much to handle down the stretch. Olivet shot 62-percent in the second half while Alma shot 36-percent. Junior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) led the Scots with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Women's Basketball Reaches MIAA Semifinals, Finishes Season With 15 Wins
The Scots started their week Tuesday (Feb. 19) with a win over Calvin College at home in the Conference First Round by a score of 68-63. Freshman guard Oretha Humphries (Detroit, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public) scored a career-high 24 points on nine-of-15 shooting while junior guard Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo Westphalia) put up 15 points, all in the second half. Alma's season came to an end in the semis when they lost to top seed No. 7 Trine University (IN) by a score of 79-43. Humphries led the way again with 11 points. The Scots end up with their most winningest season since 2003-2004.
Ladd and Cooper Win Regionals as Scots Finish Seventh
The Alma College wrestling team competed at the NCAA Division III Central Regionals this weekend and ended up placing seventh out of 19 teams. Juniors Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) were the champions of their weight classes, qualifying themselves for the NCAA Championships in two weeks. Freshman Dylan Seaton (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and sophomore Austin Fox (Fort Worth, Texas / Timber Creek) also placed for the Scots.
Swimming and Diving Program Records Fall at MIAA Championships
The Alma College swimming and diving team wrapped up its season on Saturday (Feb. 23) with the final day of the Championships. Senior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) set three new school records in the 1650 free, the 1000 free and the 500 free. In addition, sophomore Allison Brown (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) set a new program-best in the 100-yard back. The women finished the meet in fifth place while the men finished sixth.
Bailey Brings Scots Back Late
The Scots won their first game of the season in their home opener, 16-15, over Benedictine University on Saturday. Junior Trevor Bailey (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) scored five goals including the game-winner with nine seconds left. Senior Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y. / Iroquois) also netted five scores and added three assists for a team-high eight points.
Women's Lacrosse Set Back by Earlham
The Alma College women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season to Earlham College, 10-7, on Friday (Feb. 22). Both junior Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and senior Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion) posted hat tricks in the game, while junior Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) made 17 saves in net. Sophomore MacKenzie Chevalier (Fraser, Mich. / International Academy of Macomb) scored her first career goal.
Baseball Starts Season 1-0
Alma won its first game of the season against Capital University (OH), 2-1, at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Sunday (Feb. 24). Junior Dylan Dzendel (Royal Oak, Mich. / Royal Oak) pitched six shutout innings to earn the win. Junior Aaron Saenz (Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville-Sebewaing Area) picked up the save for the Scots as he came in at the top of the ninth with bases loaded and one out and was able to retire the final two batters.
Softball Drops Two to Begin Season
Senior third baseman MacKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI on Sunday (Feb. 24) against St. Mary's (MN), but it was the Cardinals that came out on top 10-9 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Morgan Trout (Otisville, Mich. / Lakeville) hit a two-RBI double in the game, while sophomore pitcher Jazmine Hamm (Byron Center, Mich. / Byron Center) struck out nine batters and allowed three earned runs over six innings. The Scots also fell 2-1 to Augustana.
Two Bowlers Named to All-Conference Teams at American Heartland Championships
The Alma College bowling team finished in fourth place at the American Heartland Championships on Sunday (Feb. 24). In addition to the tournament, Emma Davis (Horton, Mich / Hanover Horton) was named First-Team All-Conference and Josee Hale (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance Senior High) was named Second-Team All-Conference. Alma finished the qualifying round in fourth and reached the semifinals before being eliminated by Lawrence Tech, Indiana Tech and Notre Dame (OH).
Indoor Track and Field Competes at MIAA Championships
The Alma College track and field team wrapped up the indoor portion of the season at the MIAA Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 23); Both the men and women finished in seventh place. Senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) took second place in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.25 meters. In the men's event, sophomore Nolan Rowland finished in sixth with a 3.85-meter leap. Senior Jared Fleming (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) finished eighth in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line at 52.86 seconds, 0.63 seconds off his personal record
Women's Tennis Rolls to an 8-1 Win
The women's tennis team made light work of St. Francis on Sunday (Feb. 24), beating the Cougars 8-1. Sophomore Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) and freshman Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove South) each won their matches in three sets, while junior Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) swept Gabby Buday and freshman Emily McDonald (Wheeler, Mich. / Bullock Creek High School) dropped just one game to Franny Muhlenkamp.
STUNT Makes Light Work of Five Opponents
The Alma College STUNT team won all five of its matches at the Tiffin University STUNT Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 24), improving its record to 12-2 on the year. The Scots swept the host Dragons and Olivet College 21-0 in the first and last games of the day. In between, they beat both Hiram and the University of Michigan 21-1. The Scots only failed to score in one round: partner stunts seven in the second round of the fourth quarter against Purdue University. Neither team was awarded a point for that routine
Men's Tennis Falls in Tight Match
The Scots dropped a 5-4 matchup against St. Francis (IN) on Sunday (Feb. 24). Sophomore Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) came from behind to defeat Jay Stanchin 0-6, 6-3, 10-6, while junior Brett Reuter (Armada, Mich. / Armada) defeated Tyler Christlieb 6-4 and 7-5, and junior Jadon House (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) easily handled Alex Stavretis, 6-1, 6-2.
