Men's Basketball Secures Sixth Seed in MIAA Tournament

The men's basketball team earned a spot in the MIAA Tournament despite losing both its games last week. Junior Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a four-point loss to Adrian on Wednesday (Feb. 13) and freshman Brandon Rake (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall) also posted a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds against Trine on Saturday (Feb. 16).

Women's Basketball Finishes Regular Season On Four-Game Winning Streak

The Scots went 2-0 for the second consecutive week with wins at Saint Mary's College on Wednesday and against Adrian College on Saturday. Alma never trailed against the Belles in the 65-49 victory as senior forward Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) scored a season-high 22 points. The Scots then celebrated its senior class of Barnauskas, guard Alexandria Bilbo (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) and Student Manager Brooke Jackman before the game against the Bulldogs. Barnauskas once again led the way with a game-high 15 points while junior guard Madison Hill (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, six assists and six rebounds as Alma won 64-51, securing the fourth seed in this week's MIAA Tournament. The Scots reached the postseason for the first time since 2010 and will have their first home playoff game in 14 years.

Men's Lacrosse Loses Close One In Season Opener

Men's lacrosse started their 2019 campaign on the road at Augustana College (IL) on Saturday and fell 10-8. Junior Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) scored a hat trick for the Scots while freshman Timothy Gearig (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) scored his first collegiate goal late in the fourth but Alma was unable to make up a three-goal difference with only a few minutes left. Junior Hank Wickley (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) stopped 11 shots in net.

Cheer & STUNT Beats Maryville and Michigan State, Falls to Davenport

The cheer and STUNT team won games against Maryville 21-1 and Michigan State 20-10 but dropped one to Davenport 16-15 for the first time this season. However, Alma did earn a point against the Panthers in routine seven, the most difficult routine, for the first time in program history. Davenport took a 6-3 lead into halftime and the Scots pulled to within one in the first round of the fourth quarter, but couldn't pick up a point in the final two rounds.

Indoor Track and Field Competes at GVSU Tune-Up

Eight members of the track and field team competed at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up Meet on Friday (Feb. 15). Senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) reached 3.41 meters on the pole vault, beating the indoor school record by one centimeter. Sophomore Nolan Rowland (Battle Creek, Mich. / Richland Gull-Lake) placed eighth in the men's pole vault at 3.88 meters. Junior Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles while junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw Nouvel) ran in the 800-meter race for the first time in college, placing 27th.

Bowling Takes Part in Columbia 300 Hoosier Classic

Junior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich / Hanover Horton) led the bowling team with a 187.5 average over six rounds in the Columbia 300 Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis over the weekend (Feb. 16 & 17). Freshman Rachel Kuczajda and junior Josee Hale (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance Senior High) also averaged over 180 as the only three Scots to bowl in all six rounds. Freshman Kemmie Shunk had the best round of any Alma player, posting a 227 in round four.

Tennis Begins Its Spring Season

Both men's and women's tennis teams fell to Cornerstone University on Saturday (Feb. 16), the women 5-4 and the men 9-0. Sophomore Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland), sophomore Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) and junior Bernadette Garibay's (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) all earned wins, while sophomore Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich. / Big Rapids) took his match into the third set where he ultimately fell 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.
