Men's Basketball Goes 1-2 In Wild Week

The men's basketball team dropped games to Calvin and Hope this week while earning a hard-fought win against Olivet at home in overtime. The Knights shot 68-percent from three-point range on Monday (Feb. 4), as the game opened the week after being pushed back from last Wednesday due to inclement weather. On Wednesday (Feb. 6), Alma trailed the Comets for the final 15 minutes until junior Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) made the game-tying layup with 31 seconds left. The Scots made all six of its free throws in the extra period to secure the win. On Saturday (Feb. 9) at Hope, Alma hit 56-percent of its three-pointers but couldn't convert down the stretch to get the win. Woodruff averaged over 17 points per game over the week, including registering his first career double-double against the Flying Dutchmen and making seven of his 10 three-point attempts.

Scots Steal Two Road Wins

Women's Basketball had a successful week with victories at Calvin College on Monday (Feb. 4) and Albion College on Wednesday (Feb. 6). Senior forward Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) scored a season-high 21 points in the 62-51 win over the Knights. Sophomore center Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season as Alma earned its first regular-season sweep against Calvin since the 2008-2009 season. The Scots then triumphed over the Britons by a score of 60-58 in comeback fashion. Trailing by 11 in the fourth quarter, Alma reeled off a 22-9 run down the stretch to earn the win over the MIAA's third-place team. Heading into the final week of the regular-season the Scots are tied for fourth in the league and could finish as high as third with two more wins.

Wrestling Falls To Thunder, Wraps Up Invite Season

The Scots headed down to Trine University (IN) on Thursday in its final MIAA dual of the season and loss, 21-18. Juniors Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) and Isaac Nave (Onaway, Mich. / Onaway Area) as well as freshmen Jayce Kuehnlein (St. Louis, Mich. / St. Louis) and Dylan Seaton (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) all picked up wins for Alma. The team then hosted the Mid-States Invitational Saturday (Feb. 9) and took second-place thanks in part to Ladd, junior Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) and sophomore Austin Fox (Fort Worth, Texas / Timber Creek) all being the champion wrestler of their weight class. Eight other Scots also placed in the invite as Alma now prepares for regionals later this month.

Cheer & STUNT Sweeps Field at MSU

The Cheer & STUNT team defeated Michigan, Michigan State and Grand Valley State on Sunday (Feb. 10) to improve to 5-1 on the year. The Scots swept Michigan and beat GVSU 20-10 after a tight matchup with the host Spartans. Up 11-8 going into the second round of the fourth quarter, Alma secured the win by earning two points in each of the last two rounds, walking away with a 15-12 victory.

Indoor Track and Field Finishes Fifth at Aquinas

The men's and women's track and field teams each finished in fifth place at the Aquinas College Little Meet on Saturday (Feb. 9). Freshman Jackson Nordbeck (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Franklin) finished second in the men's 1000-meter run and fellow freshman Davis Spencer took third in the same race. Freshmen Elizabeth Gotaas (Alma, Mich. / Alma) and Morgan Johnson finished the women's 1000-meter run within a second of each other, while senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) placed third in the pole vault with her 3.27-meter leap.
