Men's Basketball Drops Two Close MIAA Games

The men's basketball team came up just short against Albion and Olivet last week, the second week of the conference season. Alma trailed for most of the game against the Britons but managed to stay close enough to tie the game in the waning moments. Albion attempted a shot with a few seconds remaining and missed, but Caden Ebeling converted the game-winner on a putback. Then, against Olivet on Saturday (Jan. 12), the Scots trailed by as much as 21 and pulled to within four but couldn't take the lead, ultimately falling 84-80. All five Alma starters scored in double-figures against the Comets.

Wrestling Wins First MIAA Dual, Places 10th at Spartan Mat Classic

The Scots had a busy week starting off with their home opener Thursday (Jan. 10) against Adrian College. Alma won, 29-12, in what was the conference's first wrestling dual after a 35-year hiatus. Six Scots picked up wins including two pins by junior Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) and freshman Jacob Ransom (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West). Alma then traveled to Manchester University (IN) Saturday (Jan. 12) for their Spartan Mat Classic Tournament. Junior Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) won all five of his matches on route to a first-place finish.

Track and Field Takes First at Jack Skoog Open

The track and field team finished in first place at the Jack Skoog Open, hosted by Central Michigan University, on Friday (Jan. 11). The Scots were 21 points ahead of CMU on the women's side and held off Olivet by 14 on the men's side. Senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) took first in the 200-meter sprint, sophomore Timothy Minier (Battle Creek, Mich. / St. Philip Catholic Central) won both the men's 60 and 200-meter dash races and sophomore Grace Hearth (Freeland, Mich. / Valley Lutheran) won the women's 60 meter dash. In the field events, junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw Nouvel) took second place in the long jump and triple jump and senior Lauren Kucharczyk (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) took the women's long jump.

Bowling Wins the Buckeye Baker Classic
The bowling team took first place in the Buckeye Baker Classic over the weekend, defeating Huntington University in the final round of an eight-team tournament. The Scots also beat Adrian and Ohio State in the championship bracket, after finishing the initial 36 baker games in third place. Alma bowled over 200 four times across the 44 total baker games it participated in, including a 201 in the first game of the final against Huntington.

Scots Suffer Two Conference Losses

Women's basketball went head-to-head with two tough opponents that sit high in the conference standings. On Wednesday (Jan. 9) the Scots' loss, 80-51, at nationally-ranked Hope College. Alma then hosted Albion college Saturday (Jan. 12) and fell to the Britons, 75-55. Senior forward Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) was the team's leading scorer in both games with 12 against Hope and 14 versus Albion. Sophomore center Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) recorded her third double-double of the season Saturday with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Swimming and Diving Falls to Albion

Alma dropped a dual meet to the Britons on Saturday (Jan. 12), 327-175. Senior from Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) won the men's 200-yard freestyle and Andrea Van Nuil (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) won the women's one-meter dive. The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ferrara, freshman Connor Hart (Northville, Mich. / Northville), freshman Will Brown (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) and freshman Leevi Olson (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) also earned a win with a time of 1:35.17. Freshman Jennifer Ostrowski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) was less than a second away from winning the 100-yard breaststroke race, coming in at 1:14.09.
