Men's Basketball Comes Up with Season's First Win
The men's basketball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday (Dec. 29) with a 71-64 victory over St. Scholastica in the 2018 Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament. With the score tied at 60 at 3:31, freshman guard Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) sank a jumper to give the Scots a two-point lead, then followed with another with 31 seconds left to all but seal the win. As a result, he was named to the All-Tournament team. In the previous game, Alma fell to St. Norbert College, which would go on to win the weekend tournament. Junior guard/forward Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) posted 15 points on five made threes and junior guard Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) had six points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Women's Basketball Ends Non-Conference Season with Loss to Aquinas
The women's basketball team fell on the road on Saturday (Dec. 29) at NAIA Aquinas University, 70-35. Alma struggled from the field in the game, converting just 23.5-percent of its field goals. Senior forward Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) had a team-high 14 points. Sophomore center Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) and sophomore forward Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio / Arch Bishop Alter) led the Scots (6-7) on the boards - Brandt grabbed seven and Long pulled down a season-high six.
