Men's Basketball Drops Two Games to Top-Ranked Teams
The men's basketball program fell in two road games over the weekend (Dec. 7 and 8) to No. 7 UW-Oshkosh and No. 12 UW-Whitewater in overtime. Five of Alma's seven losses this season have come from nationally ranked opponents. The Scots lost a six-point lead in the final minutes to the Warhawks after leading for most of the game. Freshman guard Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) scored 35 points on 63-percent shooting from the field and Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) had 13 points and 10 assists - his second career double-double.
Women's Basketball Earns First Conference Win
The Scots went 1-1 on the week in two road MIAA matchups. Alma defeated Adrian College, 54-49, on Wednesday (Dec. 5). A 12-5 run to finish off the third quarter put the Scots in winning position. Sophomore center Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) had a double-double with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Alma then lost to Olivet College on Saturday (Dec. 8) by a score of 70-66. Alma led for almost three quarters of the game but a 10-point final quarter proved costly. Brandt and junior guard Hannah Syme (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) had career days with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Outdoor Track and Field Season Begins
The Alma College track and field team traveled to Saginaw Valley State University on Friday (Dec. 7) to begin their 2018-19 indoor season at the SVSU Holiday Classic. Senior Justin Jones (Rockford, Mich. / Cedar Springs) set a new personal record in the 3,000-meter run, shaving five seconds off his previous fastest time. Junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw Nouvel) landed in sixth place in the long jump and senior Jared Fleming (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) took 11th place in the 400-meter dash (52.23). Senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) took eighth place in the women's pole vault event, reaching a height of 3.04 meters while Grace Hearth (Freeland, Mich. / Valley Lutheran) finished in a tie for tenth place in the high jump, landing just .02 meters shy of her personal-best.
Ladd Takes 141lb Championship as Wrestling Finishes Sixth at North Central Invitational
Alma traveled to Illinois Saturday (Dec. 8) for North Central College's annual event. Junior Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) earned first place for the first time this season by going 4-0 on the day. The All-American is now on a 12-bout winning streak and has a current record of 13-1. Sophomore Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood) also placed taking sixth in the 125 lb class. Four nationally ranked teams participated in the tournament including No. 5 Wabash College (IN) who the Scots finished ahead of in the team standings.
Head Wrestling Coach Jeremiah Tobias to Appear on WQBX
Jeremiah Tobias, the head coach of the wrestling team, will make an appearance on WQBX's Alma Coaches Show this Wednesday (Dec. 12) at Pizza One. The show will air at 7:15 p.m.
