Men's Basketball Loses Two Close Games to Nationally Ranked Teams
Alma lost two tightly contested games to nationally ranked opponents to begin its season last week. Junior Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) posted seven three-pointers - one off the program record - as part of a 33 point game in an 86-81 loss to No. 19 Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday (Nov. 17), while fellow junior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) led all players with 22 points against No. 3 Augustana on Friday (Nov. 16). Alma kept it close in both games, leading for most of the first half before falling behind in the second half. A three-pointer by from Woodruff brought the Scots to within three points with 46 seconds remaining against Illinois Wesleyan and the Titans missed a shot on the other end, but they grabbed the offensive rebound and sank both free throws after Alma was forced to foul.
Women's Basketball Wins Two
The Scots earned their first and second victories of the season with wins over Bluffton University (OH) and MacMurray College (IL). In the home opener Monday (Nov. 12) junior guard Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo-Westphalia) had a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as Alma defeated the Beavers, 67-61. Sophomore forward Jessie Jordan (Mason, Mich. / Williamston) came off the bench Saturday (Nov. 17) against the Highlanders to score a career-high 19 points in the 82-71 victory. The game was at Hope College as part of their Tip-Off Classic. The Scots also fell to Benedictine (IL), 59-51, in Holland Friday (Nov. 11). Between the two games this past weekend, junior guard Madison Hill (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds and seven assists in 87 minutes played. Hill was named to the all-tournament team.
Wrestling Takes A Win at Olivet Duals
Alma traveled to Olivet College to face Cornell College (Iowa), University of the Ozarks (AK) and No. 14 Millikin University (IL). The Scots won, 24-23, over Ozarks while falling, 24-20, to Cornell and, 25-13, to the Big Blue. Junior Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) won in all three duals for the Scots. Freshmen Jayce Kuehnlein (St. Louis, Mich. / St. Louis) and Dylan Seaton (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) had multiple victories. Sophomore Chase Beecher (Clio, Mich. / Clio) went undefeated with his one win against Cornell.
Bowling Team Posts 12 Games Over 200
The Alma College bowling team continues to perform well, this week finishing third at the BGSU Falcon Classic out of 16 teams over the weekend (Nov. 17 & 18). The Scots were led by sophomore Brooke Fornetti (Iron Mountain, Mich. / Iron Mountain), who bowled over 200 in each of the four games she competed in. Junior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich / Hanover Horton) and freshman Rachel Kuczajda also had a strong weekend, posting averages of 208.2 and 198.2, respectively.
Swimming and Diving Hosts Calvin in a Dual Meet
The Alma College men's and women's swimming and diving team hosted Calvin College for a conference dual meet on Saturday, November 17. The Scots took second place against the Knights, 135-293. Senior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) took first place in the men's 1000 yard freestyle, swimming the race in 10:15.05 and nearly beating the current school record time for that event. Senior Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) won the women's 100-yard butterfly event, finishing with a time of 1:04.09. In addition, Lehman swam in the women's 200 medley, taking fourth place (2:23.96).
