Football Honors Seniors, Falls to Hope

The football team fell to Hope on Saturday (Oct. 27), 52-23. The Flying Dutchmen had a strong game on the ground, posting 375 rushing yards and five touchdowns. The Scots outgained Hope through the air, 158 yards to 154, behind junior Mason Ippel's (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) 116 yards passing and junior Chase Hinkle's (Concord, Mich. / Concord) 90 yards on four receptions. Alma honored its 21 seniors prior to the game; senior Bailey Proctor (Bellaire, Mich. / Bellaire) capped his four-year career with his first rushing touchdown.

Volleyball Secures Home Playoff Game

Alma heads into the MIAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed after going 6-2 this season in conference. The Scots finished up the regular season this week with losses to Div. II Northwood Wednesday and No. 1 Calvin Saturday. Freshman middle blocker Bre DeLoye (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) set a career-high for kills in the match against Northwood and then topped that with five kills against the Knights.

Late Penalty Kick Ousts Men's Soccer from MIAA Playoffs

The men's soccer team took two losses to Trine on this chin last week, the second coming in the first round of the MIAA Playoffs. Sophomore Nick Stander (Macomb Twp. Mich. / Dakota) scored his second-career goal to tie the postseason game before halftime, but Trine's Nooh Aljabaly, the conference's leading goal-scorer, converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute after the Scots were called for a foul in the box. Junior goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) ends the season as the league leader in saves with 81.

Women's Soccer Closes Out 2018 Campaign

The Scots season came to an end when they fell to Calvin, 2-0, on Wednesday. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) had 10 saves in the contest. She finished the season with 99 stops, good for third most in the conference. The senior class of defenders Tori Sailar (Hastings, Mich. / Lansing Catholic), Emily Esser (Jackson, Mich. / Jackson), Annie Burns (Sanford, Mich. / Meridian) midfielders Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich. / Traverse City West), Melissa Gal (Bartlett, Ill. / Bartlett), Madi Ferry (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills), Kali Rhines (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) and forward Kristina Berzkalns (Byron Center, Mich. / Grandville) were honored before the match.

 

Cross Country Competes in Last MIAA Meet of Year

The men's and women's cross country teams ran in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship races Saturday (Oct. 27) afternoon in Kalamazoo. The men took fifth place overall, while the women finished eighth. Junior Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) led the men with his 24th-place finish and race time of 26:47.3. Freshman Aubrey Hemstreet finished 38th with a time of 24:42.7.

Emma Davis has Huge Weekend for Women's Bowling

The Alma College bowling team had its best two performances of the season over the weekend (Oct. 27 & 28), finishing in the top five in the first two American Heartland Conference Tournaments. Junior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich / Hanover Horton) led the Scots on both days, posting an average of 211.60 on Saturday and a 190.75 average on Sunday. Junior Josee Hale (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance Senior High) and freshman Kemmie Shunk aided in Alma's performances, slotting themselves in second and third, respectively, on both days.

Swimming and Diving Competes at MIAA Relays

The Alma College swim and dive team participated in the annual Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Relays on Friday (Oct. 26) night at the Holland Aquatic Center. In the women's 50-yard breaststroke race, freshman Jennifer Ostrowski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) took tenth place with a time of 33.39. Senior Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) finished 12th in the finals of the 50-yard butterfly, swimming the race in 28.57. In the men's 50 fly, Max Carey (Highland, Mich. / International Academy West) landed in 13th place (26.37).
