Football Falls Late to Undefeated Hornets

The football team fell 17-10 to Kalamazoo on Saturday (Oct. 20) in cold, rainy conditions. Tied at three for most of the game, Kalamazoo got in the end zone early in the fourth quarter and added another touchdown on a blocked punt on Alma's next possession. The Scots (1-6, 0-4 MIAA) were 1-for-4 on fourth down, including 4th and goal on the one-yard line in the second quarter. Junior quarterback Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) had a game- and career-high 85 rushing yards and a passing touchdown to senior Alex Yancy (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North).

Volleyball Beats Adrian, Falters in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The volleyball team started their week off with a home conference win Tuesday over Adrian College, 3-1. Sophomore setter Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) had a career high 53 assists. The 2018 senior class was honored before the match. The Scots then played in the Carnegie Mellon Tournament over the weekend. Although Alma won a total of five sets through three matches, they could not pull out an overall match victory. The team currently stands second in the conference heading into the final week of the regular season. They could finish as high as first, or as low as third in the MIAA.

Wentworth and Moyer Stand Out for Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team dropped two conference bouts this week. On Tuesday, the Scots loss 2-0 at Calvin College. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made a career-high 16 saves. Then Saturday versus Kalamazoo, Alma could not get out of an early hole and fell, 4-1. Senior midfielder Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich. / Traverse City West) scored after she picked up her own rebound on a penalty shot.

Men's Soccer Falls Twice but Stays in Line for Playoff Spot

The men's soccer team suffered a pair of losses to Adrian and Hope, but still remain in the MIAA playoff picture with one game left. Junior goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) made a career-high 16 saves against the Bulldogs on Wednesday (Oct. 17). Junior midfielder Torsten Holland (Okemos, Mich. / Haslett) scored his second-career goal on a penalty kick against Hope. An Alma win in the season finale against Trine would secure the fifth seed, but a loss could drop the Scots to the sixth seed or out of the postseason entirely.

Women's Bowling Places Tenth at Western Shootout

The bowling team finished in tenth place out of 27 teams at the Columbia 300 Western Shootout over the weekend. Junior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich / Hanover Horton) had a team-high 175.0 average over six games, including a round of 205, her highest of the season. Freshman Kemmie Shunk posted a team-high 212 in the sixth game. The Scots' best game was the fifth when each of Alma's five team members averaged 176.8.
