Football Falls to Adrian in cAres Game

The Alma College football team fell to Adrian College 28-23 on Saturday (Oct. 13) in the program's cAres game to promote cancer awareness. Alma (1-5, 0-3 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) put up 291 yards of offense, 161 of which were on the ground. The Scots used a two-quarterback system with Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) and Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell). Stevens had 78 yards passing and two touchdowns, one to Joseph Schaefer (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) and the other to Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich. / Concord). Ippel led the team with 68 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Volleyball Goes 3-0 To Stay Hot

The volleyball team is in the midst of their longest win streak (seven) of the season after adding three more this week. The Scots went down to Adrian and beat the Bulldogs, 3-1, Wednesday (Oct. 10). Freshman outside hitter Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) had a career-high 21 kills and junior outside hitter Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) recorded a career-high 27 digs in the match. Alma followed it up Saturday (Oct. 13) with a pair of sweeps over Anderson University (IN) and Franklin College (IN). Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) gathered a combined 119 assists on the week. The sophomore ranks third in the conference with 630 helpers.

Swimming Takes Down Hiram

The men's and women's swimming and diving team defeated Hiram College by a combined score of 376–120 Saturday afternoon (Oct. 13), their first home-meet win and victory for both the men's and women's teams since January 2013. The Scots won 26 out of the 32 events at today's meet, including both relay and diving events. Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) took first place in both the 50 and 100-yard fly races, with times of 29.04 and 1:04.85. Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) picked up wins in a trio of events-the men's 100 (52.55), 500 (5:16.45), and 1000-yard freestyle (11:01.30) races. The Scots also participated in a meet at Saginaw Valley State where freshman Will Brown (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) posted a time of 2:26.58 in the 200 breaststroke and Ferrara had a 5:08.94.

Cross Country Posts Strong Showing at Inter-Regional Rumble

Aubrey Hemstreet and Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) led the cross country team in the Inter-Regional Rumble on Saturday (Oct. 14). Hemstreet was clocked at 23:54.9 while Reed came in at 26:31.1 on a soft, wet course. Juniors Madeline McDonnell (Grosse Point, Mich. / Grosse Point South) and Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich. / Ithaca) came in under 25 minutes while Nathan Idalski (Gaylord, Mich. / Johannesburg-Lewiston) and Karl Stroup (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) finished under 28 minutes.

Women's Bowling Starts with Orange and Black Tournament

The bowling team began its season with a 14th place finish at the Orange and Black Classic over the weekend (Oct 13 and 14). Three players from the University of Pikeville finished in the top five of individual players. Josee Hale (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance Senior High) led the Scots with 880 total pins and a best game of 196. Emma Davis (Horton, Mich / Hanover Horton) finished second on the team with a total score of 824. Freshman Kemmie Shunk had the Scots' highest average at 182.25 over four games and a team-high 243 in the third round.

Men's Soccer Stumble Against Conference Foes

The men's soccer team fell 6-0 in a pair of conference games to No. 3 Calvin and Kalamazoo last week. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Reid (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) had a career-high eight saves against the Knights. Junior midfielder Tanner Parrett (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) had two shots on goal against Olivet. 

Women's Soccer Falls on the Road

Freshman forward Meghan Pfile (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) scored for the second straight game as the Scots lost to Olivet Tuesday (Oct. 9), 3-1. Sophomore goalie Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made five saves for Alma. The game was played in a constant rainstorm and because of unplayable field conditions the match had to be stopped with just under six minutes remaining. The Scots have two conference games coming up, one on the road against Calvin on Tuesday (Oct. 16) and one at home versus Kalamazoo on Saturday (Oct. 20).

Men's Golf Ends Season in Seventh

The men's golf team finished the fall season seventh in the MIAA after an eighth-place finish at the season-ending MIAA Fall Finale Tournament over the weekend. The Scots ended the season seventh in the conference. Hope College finished in first place with 1718 strokes total, Calvin took second with 1770 and Trine in third with 1799 strokes. Eli Pinter (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) put up a 162 (80, 82) while Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich. / Big Rapids) also posted an 80 in the second round.
