Football Struggles to Contain Carswell, No. 14 Trine

The Alma College football team fell to No. 14 Trine University 52-24 on Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon. Thunder running back Lamar Carswell ran for 293 yards and five touchdowns. Steven Sowa (Lincoln Park, Mich. / St. Frances Cabrini) led the Alma rushing attack, which saw five players tote the ball at least six times. Sowa had 66 yards on 12 attempts, while Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich. / Concord) put up 61 yards on nine carries. Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison), Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) and Austin Spratling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Wyoming Kelloggsville) all scored on the ground.

Volleyball Takes Care of Albion, Saint Mary's

The volleyball team earned two wins in two different ways last week. It beat Albion 3-2 in its first five-set match of the season. Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) posted career-highs in kills (19) and digs (28) in the match. It came back to sweep Saint Mary's on Saturday (Oct. 6), where Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) had 41 assists and nine kills on a 56.2 hitting percentage. The Scots are in second place in the MIAA behind No. 1 Calvin more than halfway through the conference season.

Women's Golf Finishes Fifth, Basso Makes All-Tournament Team

Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion) of the Alma College women's golf team was named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association All-Tournament team as the Fall season came to a close over the weekend. The Scots finished in fifth place, 10 strokes behind fourth-place Calvin after five conference tournaments. Saint Mary's, Hope, Albion, and Calvin will compete in the spring for the chance to go to the national tournament.

Men's Soccer Scores Two Wins

The men's soccer team came away with a pair of 2-1 wins last week against Olivet and Albion. Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) scored the game-winner against the Britons in the 108th minute after the two teams were tied at one for over 70 minutes of game time. He and Kyle Framer (Greenville, Mich. / Greenville) put away the Comets earlier in the week. Sam Swem (Buchanan, Mich. / Buchanan) also scored his first career-goal against Albion.

Men's Cross Country Finishes Fifth at Lansing Invitational, Women 12th

The men's cross country team finished fifth of 21 teams while the women took 12th place in the Lansing Invitational on Friday (Oct. 5) at Grant Woods Park in Lansing. Justin Jones (Cedar Springs, Mich. / Cedar Springs) led the men (26:53.3) and placed 28th overall, and junior Aubrey Hemstreet was the fastest on the women's side (20:08.5).

Kyle Bodkins Shoots Season-Low for Men's Golf

The men's golf finished eighth in the fourth Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree on Monday (Oct 1) afternoon. Kyle Bodkins (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) shot a season-low 78 (+7) to lead Alma's 326 stroke effort. The Scots are seventh in the conference with just the two-round Fall Finale remaining in the Fall season.

Women's Soccer Suffers a Pair of Losses

The women's soccer team fell to Albion and Saint Mary's last week. Meghan Pfile (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) scored her first career goal against the Belles. Goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made nine saves against Albion. She is fourth in the MIAA in saves with 62.

 

Murdie Posts Two Wins for Men's Tennis

The Alma College men's tennis team fell 7-2 to Albion College on Thursday (Oct. 4). Freshman Brenden Murdie (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) had earned both wins for the Scots on the day, the first being a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Carter Moore and the second being an 8-3 win in doubles competition with junior David Suidgeest (St. Johns, Mich. / St. Johns) over Moore and Patrick Smoker.
