Football Slows Down Powerful Albion but Falls in 2OT
The Alma College football team held a late lead against Albion but eventually fell 37-34 in double overtime on Saturday (Sept. 29). The Britons converted a 4th & 10 backed up in their own end with 1:36 remaining to tie the game and capitalized on a missed Alma field goal in the second extra period. The Scots forced three turnovers and held the high-powered Albion offense 20 points under its scoring average. Quarterbacks Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) and Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) each rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown. Joseph Schaefer (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) caught five passes for 111 yards and a score.
Volleyball Begins Jittery but Settles Down to Beat Trine
The Alma College volleyball team put away Trine University 3-1 on Wednesday (Sept. 26) after a rough start. It lost the first set 25-15 but eventually found its way behind a balanced attack. Sara Majerle (McBain, Mich. / McBain Public) is currently sixth in the MIAA in kills per set with 2.97. Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) is first in the league in total blocks with 49 and fourth in hit percentage at .338 percent.
Women's Golf in Battle for Playoff Spot as Season Winds Down
The Alma College women's golf team finished in fourth place at the fourth MIAA Jamboree on Saturday (Sept. 29). The Scots are fifth in the conference after four tournaments, picking up six strokes on at the Milham Park Golf Club. Seniors Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion) and Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood) each finished with a 79, finishing tied for third. Alma is two strokes behind Albion and six behind Calvin in the conference standings with two tournaments left in the Fall season.
Men's Soccer Ends Non-Conference Play with Losses
The Alma College men's soccer team went 0-2 this week, falling 1-0 to Cleary and 4-1 to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the team's final non-conference games of the year. Kyle Framer (Greenville, Mich. / Greenville) scored for the Scots against Cleary and Andrew Reid (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) made ten combined saves.
Women's Soccer Gets Pair of Firsts in MIAA Games
Tori Aquilino (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton) scored her first career goal in a tie with Trine and Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich. / Traverse City West) scored her first goal of the season in the Alma College women's soccer team's loss at Adrian last week. Keeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made ten saves against the Bulldogs. Wentworth's save total was three off her career-high, et earlier this season also against the Bulldogs.
Men's Golf Gets Three Rounds in the Mid-80's in Fourth MIAA Tournament
The Alma College men's golf team placed seventh in the fourth MIAA Jamboree on Thursday (Sept. 27) with 343 strokes. Alma is seventh in the conference standings with two tournaments remaining. Senior Bennett Schmitt (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) shot an 84 and both Kyle Bodkins (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) and Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich. / Big Rapids) posted an 85.
Women's Tennis Hangs with 12-3 Grace College
The Alma College women's tennis team fell to Grace College (Ind.) 8-1 on Saturday (Sept. 29). Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) and Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) won the only game for the Scots 8-4 in a doubles match against Morgan Mast and Shelby Bankson. Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) and Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) took four games from Grace in the #2 doubles match but ultimately ended up falling.
