Football Nearly Completes Comeback
The football team fell 26-15 to Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday (Sept. 15). Alma's (1-2) biggest deficit in the game was 12 points. It got to within three by the middle of the fourth quarter but could not take the lead. Junior quarterback Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) rushed for a career- and game-high 129 yards on 21 carries (6.1 yards per carry), including a long of 30 yards. Sophomore running back Steven Sowa (Lincoln Park, Mich. / St. Frances Cabrini) had two scores on the ground. Junior defensive back Max Kretzschmar (Marine City, Mich. / Marine City) snagged his second interception of the season.
Volleyball Drops Just One Set in Three Matches
The volleyball team is on a six-match win streak after three more wins over the weekend. Alma (10-1) defeated Augustana 3-0, Webster University 3-1 and Loras College 3-0. Freshman outside hitter Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) led the Scots with 32 kills in their three matches on a .298 hit percentage. She also had a team-high 49 digs and six aces. Majerle is sixth in the conference in kills per set with 2.96 and is the highest ranked freshman. Senior middle blocker Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) is second in the league in blocks (39) and third in the league in hit percentage (.360).
Women's Golf Wins Alma Invite, Starts Conference Play in Fifth
The women's golf team shot 353 and 341 in two tournaments this weekend, winning the Alma Invitational by one stroke over Aquinas. The Scots shot an average of 83.75 in the tournament and were led by freshman Ava Gardiner (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Adlai E. Stevenson) with an 83. Senior Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion) shot a week-low 78 at the MIAA Jamboree on Thursday (Sept. 13). The Scots sit in fifth place after the first MIAA tournament, four strokes behind Olivet and seven behind Albion.
Men's Soccer Tripped Up in Home Opener
The men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Transylvania in its home opener on Saturday (Sept. 15). Junior Torsten Holland (Okemos, Mich./ Haslett) scored his first career goal on a penalty kick in the second half, while junior goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) recorded nine saves in-game. Mast is currently second in the MIAA in saves with 23 and fourth in save percentage at 79.3 percent.
Women's Soccer Splits a Pair of Matches
The women's soccer team went 1-1, which started with a 3-0 win over Heidelberg on Friday (Sept. 14). Sophomore midfielder Makenzie Rajewski (Midland, Mich. / Midland), sophomore forward Lauren Sollestre (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Marian) and senior forward Kristina Berzkalns (Byron Center, Mich. / Grandville) all scored for Alma. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made five saves in the game and added another five in a 3-0 loss to Ohio Northern on Saturday (Sept. 15).
Freshman Pinter Leads Men's Golf
The men's golf team finished seventh in the first MIAA Jamboree on Wednesday (Sept. 12) and 11th at the Irish Hills Invitational over the weekend. Freshman Eli Pinter (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) shot a week-low 77 at the Jamboree; senior Kyle Bodkins (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) shot a 79. Pinter came back with a 79 in round one of the Irish Hills Invite.
