Ippel Scores in Final Minute to Halts Manchester Comeback
The Alma College football team won its home opener on Saturday (Sept. 8), 39-33, against Manchester. Alma led for most of the game but Manchester clawed its way back by the fourth quarter. Down 33-31 with under four minutes to go, junior dual-threat quarterback Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) scored what would be the game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion. Ippel led the Scots in all-purpose yardage — he was 13-of-22 throwing for 136 yards and two touchdowns and added 98 rushing yards on 18 attempts (5.4 yards per carry) and a score on the ground.
Volleyball Continues Hot Start
The volleyball team went 3-1 at the MIAA Preview Tournament over the weekend with its only loss coming against No. 1 Calvin College. Junior outside hitter Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) led the Scots in kills with 18 on day one of the tournament while freshmen outside hitter Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) and opposite Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) also had double-digit kills with 16 and 15, respectively. On day two, senior middle blocker Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) led Alma in kills, kill percentage and blocks and Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) set a new career-high in assists with 40 in game one, then broke it with 52 in game two.
Women's Golf Wins Defiance Invitational with Program Low 324
The Alma College women's golf team won the Defiance Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 8) with a program record 324 (+40). This was Alma's first tournament win since 1997. The Scots had four top-ten finishers, led by Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood) who took first place in the ten-team, 54 player tournament with a 77 (+6), three strokes off her career-low. Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion) tied her career-low with a 79 (+8), freshman Kirstyn Cotton (Midland, Mich. / Midland) had a career-best 83 (+12), and senior Hannah Joslin (Linden, Mich. / Linden) finished two strokes off her career low with an 85 (+14).
Men's Soccer Splits a Pair of Games but Knocks off Previously Undefeated Spalding
The men's soccer team went 1-1 for the second straight week, falling 2-0 to Centre and defeating Spalding 2-1. Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) and Tanner Parrett (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) each scored for the Scots, while junior goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) made a season-high seven saves. Canlas, Parrett and senior fullback Justin Johnson (Midland, Mich. / Midland) were named to the All-Tournament team as the Scots finished with the second-best record of the four involved teams.
Cross Country Opens Season with Fourth Place Finish
The Alma College men's and women's cross country teams finished in 20th of 25 teams at the Calvin Knight Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 8) in their second meet of the season. Aubrey Hemstreet led the women's team, finishing in 20:25.1 for 90th place, while Justin Jones (Cedar Springs, Mich./Cedar Springs) finished in 27:17.5, leading the Scots again this week and taking 83rd place overall.
Women's Soccer Picks up First Win of the Season
Sophomore forward Lauren Sollestre (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Marian) scored in the game's final minute against Concordia Universtiy of Chicago on Saturday (Sept. 8) to give Alma its first win of the year. The Scots dropped their next game 1-0 to the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Men's Golf Places Sixth at the Alma Invitational
The Alma College men's golf team finished sixth at the Alma Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 8) with a score of 350 (+62). The Scots were led by Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich. / Big Rapids) who shot an 83 (+11). Seniors Bennett Schmitt (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) and Kyle Bodkins (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) shot an 86 (+14) and 89 (+17), respectively.
Men's Tennis Opens Season Against Trine
The Alma College men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision at Trine University on Saturday (Sept. 8). Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) was the only Scot to earn a victory. He played in the No. 1 singles match against Blake Trusty and won 6-3, 6-3. Ralston teamed up with Brett Reuter (Armada, Mich. / Armada) in the No. 1 doubles match, as well, but fell to Blake and Evan Trusty 8-4.
Women's Tennis Swept by Trine in Season Opener
The Alma College women's tennis team opened its season with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Trine University on Saturday (Sept. 8). In the No. 2 doubles match, Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) and Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) fell 9-7 to Kyra Braun and Katie Simon. In the No. 3 match, Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) and Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) lost to Andrea Jordan and Camille Lozier 8-6.
