Chase Hinkle Goes for 152 Yards in Season-Opening Loss
The football team dropped its season opener at Baldwin Wallace on Thursday (August 30). Junior wide receiver Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich. / Concord) was named the Lee Tressel Shrine Classic Player of the Game - he led all skill position players with 152 yards and two touchdowns on six catches, one being a 56-yard catch and run. His yardage total is the most by an Alma player since November 12, 2016. Junior quarterback Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) went for 282 yards and two scores and one interception. He completed 16 passes on 25 attempts. Sophomore running back Steven Sowa (Lincoln Park, Mich. / St. Frances Cabrini) had 10 carries for 40 yards; Ippel added 18 yards on the ground on seven carries.
Volleyball Starts Hot Behind Novak, Bush, Ullrich
The volleyball team went 4-0 and only dropped one set in its first weekend of games at the Buc Blast Tournament in Beloit, Wisc. Senior Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) had 29 kills on a .311 hit percentage and added 14 blocks. Sophomore Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) posted 26 kills, 81 assists and hit .321. Novak was one of six players named to the All-Tournament team. Freshman opposite Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) had 28 kills, hit .333 and only committed five errors in her first career collegiate games.
Hilley Hits Program's First Hole-in-One, Women's Golf Places Fourth
The Alma College women's golf team placed fourth at the Olivet Invitational with 705 total strokes, just one stroke behind Olivet. Senior Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood) hit a hole-in-one on the par 3 third, the only eagle of the tournament and the first hole-in-one in the 27-year history of the Alma College women's golf team. She led Alma's second round effort with an 84 (+12), nine strokes better than her Saturday score.
Farmer Scores Twice, Stander Scores for the First Time in Men's Soccer Split
The men's soccer team went 1-1 to open its season. Junior forward Kyle Farmer (Greenville, Mich. / Greenville) scored both goals in the Scots' win over Greenville, his first goals since the 2016 season. Sophomore midfielder Nick Stander (Macomb Twp. Mich. / Dakota) scored his first career goal and junior goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) recorded his first career assist against Millikin.
Cross Country Opens Season with Fourth Place Finish
The Alma College men's and women's cross country teams began its season with two fourth-place finishes at the Jeff Drenth Invitational last Friday. Both the men and the women finished behind Michigan State, Central Michigan and Hillsdale. Senior Justin Jones (Cedar Springs, Mich. / Cedar Springs) posted the best time (16:24.32) on the men's side and junior Mallory Munderloh (St. Louis, Mich. / St. Louis) led the women (20:55.21).
Women's Soccer Drops Opening Two Games
The women's soccer team fell in both its matches over the weekend. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) is tied for third in the conference in saves with eight after two games.
Men's Golf Opens Season at Lou Collins Invitational
The men's golf team finished in fourteenth place at the Lou Collins Invitational over the weekend. Sophomore Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich. / Big Rapids) shot a 79 (+7) to lead the Scots. Alma shot a combined 673 over four golfers in the two-day tournament.
