Russo Named new Sports Information Director

Alma, Mich. - Alma College Director of Athletics Steven Rackley announced Wednesday (August 1) that Zach Russo has been named the new sports information director for the Alma Scots. Russo will begin his duties immediately.

"I am excited to welcome Zach as our new sports information director," Rackley said. "He brings well-rounded experience and an enthusiasm that I believe will grow our program and continue the success of our sports information department."

Russo joined the Alma College sports information department as the assistant director in the summer of 2016. During his time at Alma, Russo has been responsible for all statistical information for the men's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's golf, women's basketball, women's bowling, women's lacrosse and softball teams. He also handled game-day management duties for football and men's basketball, as well as all video content of the department.

"I'd like to thank Steven Rackley for giving me this opportunity," Russo said. "I also want to thank Sarah Dehring and the rest of the search committee for their work during the hiring process. Alma College has earnestly welcomed and accepted me in my two years here and I hope to repay that by continuing to move the department in a positive direction."

In addition to his administrative duties, Russo oversaw the student organization Between the Lines, which was formed in the Fall of 2016. Between the Lines is a media platform for students that produces videos, provides commentary at events, records podcasts and generally familiarizes students with various forms of media. He has also taught classes in sports communications.

Russo takes over for Paul Thomas, who is now the Director of Life Events with Celebrate Ministries.

"Paul was a fantastic supervisor and mentor who did a tremendous job as Alma's SID for three years," said Russo. "He allowed me the room to grow and learn from my mistakes. Specifically, he played a direct role in assembling the department's student worker staff, as well as the top student assistant in the conference for four straight years. It's sad to see him leave, but he left the department in a great position and I'm looking forward to building upon it."

Russo comes to Alma from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut. There, he covered the men's basketball team, the men's and women's soccer teams, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams and the softball team. He was also one of the figures responsible for leading the movement to live stream all home events. In addition, he provided commentary for multiple home events, including football, men's and women's basketball, women's lacrosse and field hockey.

Russo is a native of Middlesex, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from Quinnipiac University in 2013 and a Master of Science degree in journalism from Quinnipiac in 2014.
