Women's golf to compete in NCAA qualifier

The women's golf team is back in action this week, competing in the MIAA Spring Qualifier. The tournament is scheduled to begin with one 18-hole round on Tuesday, April 17, at The Ravines in Saugatuck, Mich. The qualifier will continue on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, with a pair of 18-hole rounds at Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Ind. Hope College, Olivet College and Saint Mary's College (IN) are competing with the Scots for the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships. This is the first time the Scots are competing for a spot in the NCAA tournament since 2003. 

Baseball drops doubleheaders against Thunder, Dutch

The baseball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders last week, falling by 2-1 and 9-4 margins on Tuesday (April 10) to Trine University before opening a series with Hope College, falling to the Flying Dutchmen, 6-5 and 6-2, on Thursday (April 12) on the road. Halfway through its league schedule, Alma is currently tied for fifth place in the league standings with Trine. Senior Matt Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) currently ranks second in the MIAA with 23 RBIs, while sophomore Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) is tied for fourth with 17. On the mount, senior Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) is third in the conference with a 2.15 ERA, while his four victories tie him for third.  

Softball struggles against nationally-ranked foes

The softball team dropped five of six games this past week, including three games to nationally-ranked opponents. Sophomore Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich./North Branch) hit two home runs in the six games and led the team with six RBI, three runs scored and an .857 slugging percentage. Junior Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) went 9-for-18 three runs scored and four stolen bases. Multiple Scots are among the conference leaders. Among them, Schweiger is second in steals (13), senior Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) is third in home runs (seven) and sophomore Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich./Coleman) is fifth in batting average (.458).

Men's lacrosse scores record 26 goals in win over Adrian

The men's lacrosse team pumped a school-record 26 goals past Adrian College on Tuesday (April 10) as the Scots rolled to a 26-2 victory at Bahlke Field. Sophomore Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) led all players with six goals, while three other players - junior Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iriquois), sophomore Tom Needham (Saline, Mich./Saline), and senior Austen Irrer (Midland, Mich./Midland) - recorded hat tricks, scoring three goals each. Irrer led all players with seven points, added four assists. Sophomore Hank Wickley (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) two saves on Adrian's four shots as the Scots amassed a school-record 68 shots. 

Women's lacrosse falls at Albion

The women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-6 decision at Albion on Wednesday (April 11). Sophomore goalie Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made 19 saves, six off her season-high. Ray leads the MIAA in saves (158) and is tied for second in save percentage (53.7). Senior Brianna Soriano (San Diego, Calif./Serra) had a team-high three goals; she is fourth in the MIAA in goals with 34. Freshmen Sam DeBoer (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) had two goals and Alyssa Gall (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond) had one - each tied their season total entering the game.

Track team competes at Olivet quad meet

The track and field team competed at the Olivet College quad meet on Friday (April 13), with the men's team finishing third, while the women placed fourth. Several Scots posted personal-bests in the meet, including sophomore John Mitrzyk (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling), who took home one runner-up finish and two third-place spots. Mitrzyk took second in the long jump and third in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, earning a new personal-best in the 100-meter. The Scots are idle until April 27. 

Men's tennis splits matches

The men's tennis team defeated Albion College, 6-3, on Tuesday (April 10) before falling by a 6-3 margin to Adrian College on Wednesday (April 11) last week at the Superior Street Tennis Courts. Alma swept the doubles matches against the Britons, while senior Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) won his match at No. 4 singles to pick up his 60th overall victory. Ackerman now has 38 wins in singles competition and 23 victories in doubles action, including a win at No. 2 doubles against Adrian. Senior BJ Schutte (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was responsible for Alma's two other points against the Bulldogs, including his first win at No. 1 singles. 

Women's tennis seeking first MIAA win

The women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 loss at Hope College on Monday (April 9) before dropping an 8-1 decision at home against Adrian College on Wednesday (April 11). Freshmen Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich./Portland) and Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) picked up the Scots' point against the Bulldogs, winning the No. 1 doubles match. Alma will host Olivet College to close out the home portion of the schedule on Friday, April 20, before playing three straight road matches to wrap up the season.
