Cheerleading squad seeks second NCA title

The cheerleading team will be seeking its second consecutive National Cheerleaders Association title this week when the Scots travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the 2018 NCA Collegiate National Championship. Alma, which won the Intermediate All-Girl III division in 2017, has elevated into the All-Girl Cheer Division III group this year. The Scots will perform their routine in the preliminary round on Thursday, April 5, at the Ocean Center, while the finals will take place on Friday evening, April 6, outdoors at the Daytona Beach Band Shell. In addition, the Scots will be represented in the Group Stunt competition for the first time in program history. The stunt competition will be held on Saturday, April 7, at the Band Shell. 

Dance team to compete at NDA College Nationals

The dance team, in its first season as a competitive squad, will also be competing in Daytona Beach, Fla., this week as part of the National Dance Alliance Collegiate National Championship. Alma won a Silver Bid to the competition over the summer and will compete in the Jazz Division III grouping. The preliminary round takes place during the afternoon on Thursday at the Peabody Auditorium, while the finals will be held late afternoon on Friday at the Ocean Center. 

Baseball shells Albion to open series

The baseball team swept Albion College on Friday (March 30) afternoon in a home doubleheader as the Scots and Britons opened a four-game series. Alma earned a 5-2 victory in Game 1 after scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth before shelling Albion in Game 2, defeating the Brits by a 20-3 margin after going up 10-0 after two innings. Sophomore Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) went 6-for-7 at the plate with three doubles and two RBIs to lead Alma, which has now won three straight. Sophomore Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) collected five hits, including three doubles and a home run, while tallying four RBIs in the two games. The two teams finish the series today in Albion. 

Softball splits with No. 6 Trine after 22-hour delay

The softball team took one of two games from No. 6 Trine University (IN) last past week, including an eight-inning win after the game was postponed due to darkness. Junior McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI in the win, and senior Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) hit her sixth home run of the year, a career-high. Brooks also earned the win, pitching eight innings and striking out three batters. Brooks is among the top three in the conference in multiple offensive categories, including home runs (six), RBI (33) and slugging percentage (.824). She also has seven wins, fourth best in the MIAA.

Women's Lacrosse defeats Adrian, falls at Saint Mary's to open MIAA play

The women's lacrosse team split a pair of road conference games last week against Adrian College and Saint Mary's College (IN). Senior Brianna Soriano (San Diego, Calif./Serra) scored six goals, one off her career-high, while fellow senior Shelby Frazer (Holt, Mich./Holt) and sophomore Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) added four goals in Alma's 15-11 win over the Bulldogs on Wednesday (March 28). Soriano (29) and Frazer (23) are among the top seven goal scorers in the MIAA. In addition, sophomore Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made 32 saves in the two games and is second in the conference in both saves (107) and save percentage (55.2). 

Goggins sets pole vault record at Calvin double dual

The track and field team took on Calvin College and Hope College on Thursday (March 29), with the women's team taking second while the men's team finished third. Junior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich./Hastings) won the pole vault with a school-record performance, rising up to 3.42 meters, while freshman Grace Hearth (Hastings, Mich./Hastings) earned two victories: jumping 1.50 meters in the high jump and finishing the 100-meter dash in 13.31 seconds. Freshman Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) was also victorious, capturing the shot put with a throw of 10.91 meters. On the men's side, sophomore John Mitrzyk (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) won the long jump, landing at 6.45 meters, and sophomore Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) won the triple jump with a 12.78-meter performance.

Women's tennis falls to Albion in MIAA opener

The women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Albion College on Friday (March 30) as the two schools opened the MIAA portion of their seasons at the Superior Street Tennis Courts. Albion took two of the three doubles matches, with the Scots winning the No. 1 doubles contest as the team of freshmen Brook Butterfield (Portland, Mich./Portland) and Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) topped Olivia Conover and Madelyn Polich by an 8-5 margin. In singles play, the Britons won the top four flights to seal the match. Alma grabbed points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, with sophomore Jessica Penhale (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) posting a 6-0, 6-1 win, at the No. 5 spot, while senior Amy Wood (Grand Rapids, Mich./City) won her No. 6 singles match with a 10-7 triumph in a match tiebreaker.

Men's tennis swept by Calvin

The men's tennis team opened the conference portion of its season on Friday (March 30) at the Superior Street Tennis Courts, falling to Calvin College by a 9-0 margin. The Scots were swept in straight sets in every singles match except No. 1 singles, where senior BJ Schuette (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was able to take the first set off his opponent before falling in the second and third frames. At No. 3 singles, senior Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) went to a first-set tiebreaker before dropping the second set, 7-5.
