Home opener for baseball team set for Tuesday
The baseball team is scheduled to open the home portion of its season on Tuesday, March 20, with a non-conference doubleheader against Finlandia University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Scots Park, with Game 2 scheduled to begin at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Softball splits with Wittenberg in home opener
The softball team went 1-3 in its four games last week, splitting with Wittenberg University (OH) on Saturday (March 17) before suffering a pair of walk-off defeats on Sunday (March 18) at Thomas More College (KY). Against the Tigers, Alma fell in Game 1, 12-8, before responding with a 9-8 victory in nine innings after freshman Hannah Cambe (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) scored on an error to seal the win. On Sunday, the Saints downed Alma, 2-1, after scoring with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, in Game 1 before posting a 5-4 win with a walk-off homer in Game 2 to seal the sweep. Senior Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) owns a MIAA-best 44 strikeouts, while sophomore Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich./Coleman) is third in the league with a .517 batting average. In addition, senior Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) is third in the MIAA with 22 RBIs and junior McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) is fifth with 19 RBIs as the Scots are the only team with two players totaling 19 or more RBIs so far this year.
Baseball drops three at Wheaton Invitational
The baseball team fell in all three of its contests at the Wheaton College Invitational last weekend, suffering a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Aurora University on Friday (March 16), followed by 10-5 and 9-1 losses to St. Mary's College (MN) and Wheaton College (IL), respectively, on Saturday (March 17). With conference play opening this week against defending MIAA champion Adrian College, the Scots boast two of the best pitchers in the league. Sophomore Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren) has an ERA of 2.08, second-best in the MIAA, while junior Joseph Barrons (Kingston, Mich./Kingston) is fourth with a 2.49 ERA. Riggs also has a MIAA-best 22 strikeouts. In addition, senior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) has a league-high four home runs, including one last weekend against St. Mary's.
Men's lacrosse splits non-conference action
The men's lacrosse team defeated Heidelberg University (OH), 16-7, on Wednesday (March 14) at Bahlke Field before opening a five-game road swing with a 13-6 loss at Capital University (OH) on Saturday (March 17). Senior Daniel Buchy (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) scored three goals in the win over the Student Princes, while junior Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iriquois) posted two goals and two assists against the Crusaders. Nycz leads the MIAA with 16 assists this season and ranks third with 25 points, while sophomore Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) is second in the league with 26 assists and third in the MIAA in both goals (15) and assists (11).
Women's lacrosse holds off Cleary
The women's lacrosse team held on to defeat Cleary University, 16-13, in non-conference action on Friday (March 15) in Howell, Mich. Senior Brianna Soriano (San Diego, Calif./Serra) scored a career-high seven goals in the win, while senior Shelby Frazer (Holt, Mich./Holt) added a season-high five markers. Soriano currently ranks third in the MIAA with 20 goals, while Frazer is fifth with a total of 15 markers.
Cheer team places second at GVSU Laker Classic
The cheerleading team placed second in the All-Girl Advanced Division at the GVSU Laker Classic on Sunday (March 18), scoring 79.7 points. Davenport University won the event with a score of 86.1, while Grand Valley State was third with a mark of 78.8. The Scots host the Alma College Invitational on Sunday, March 25, at Art Smith Arena, in the team's final tune-up before the National Cheerleaders Association College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla., on April 4-7.
Men's tennis shut out by Lawrence Tech
The men's tennis team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Friday (March 16) with a 9-0 setback against Lawrence Tech. The Scots, with a 6-6 record, have fallen in their last three matches and are off for the week before opening MIAA play with a home match against Calvin College on Saturday, March 31.
Women's tennis closes out non-conference schedule
The women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 defeat at Lawrence Tech on Friday (March 16) as the Scots closed out non-conference play. Alma, which owns a 3-7 mark, is off for a week before hosting Albion College to open MIAA play on Saturday, March 31.
