Ladd looks to become Alma's next All-American

Sophomore Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) will represent Alma College at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships this week. Ladd qualified for the event with a third-place finish in the 141-pound bracket at the NCAA III Central Regional. The NCAA III Championships are scheduled for Friday-Saturday, March 9-10, in Cleveland, Ohio. Four wrestlers in the history of the program have earned All-American status, which is bestowed upon student-athletes that finish sixth or higher in their weight class at the NCAA III Championships. 

Baseball wins three during Florida trip

The baseball team returned from its annual Florida Spring Break trip with a 3-3 record, including a pair of one-run victories. The Scots have hit six home runs in their first five games, led by senior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate), who has a team-high three. In the history of the program, only 15 Scots have hit five or more home runs in a single season. After five games, sophomores Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Raipds) and Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) lead Alma with a .385 and .375 batting average, respectively, while Trucks' .565 on-base percentage is the best on the team. 

Softball opens season with hot bats

The softball team went 10-2 in Florida last week during the team's annual Spring Break trip to begin its season. Five Scots are batting over .400 so far: sophomores Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich. / Coleman) and Bry Chapman (Holt, Mich./Holt), juniors Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) and McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) and senior Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland). All but Chapman are slugging over .600, as well. Alma has been led by senior Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) on the mound. She is 4-0 and has 34 strikeouts (7.44 per seven innings). Freshman Jazmine Hamm (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) was also strong on the trip, going 3-1 with one save. Alma scored nearly eight runs per game on the trip and allowed an average of under five. It also won two games in five innings.

Men's lacrosse team picks up first win of season

The men's lacrosse team went 1-2 on its Spring Break trip and picked up its first win of the year with a 22-14 victory at Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday (March 4). The game followed a close loss at Greensboro College (NC), where the Pride scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 to play in 10-9 defeat on Friday (March 2). After four games, sophomore Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) leads the team with 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points, while sophomore transfer Trevor Bailey (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich./Sault Area) has scored nine times. 

Women's lacrosse ends opening with with two MIAA leaders

The women's lacrosse team played two games in Texas last week, defeating the University of Dallas and falling to Otterbein College (OH). After the first week of action, senior Brianna Soriano (San Diego, Calif./Serra) leads the MIAA in goals with 13, while fellow senior Shelby Frazer (Holt, Mich./Holt) is right behind her in third place with 10. Soriano also leads the conference in ground balls with 16 and caused turnovers with 10. Frazer has converted four of her five free position shots, the best percentage in the league among players with at least three chances.

Men's tennis team extends winning streak to four matches

The men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four games with an 8-1 win at Defiance College (OH) on Tuesday (Feb. 24) to finish its Spring Break road trip with a 4-0 record. The Scots, after nine matches, have already matched their win total from a year ago with a 6-3 mark. Freshman Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) leads Alma with a 7-2 record, including a 4-0 mark at No. 4 singles, while senior Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) is 6-3 this year, including 4-0 at No. 2 singles. 

Women's tennis picks up third win with victory at Defiance

The women's tennis team has won back-to-back matches, including a 6-3 victory at Defiance College (OH) on Tuesday (Feb. 24) to close out a five-match road trip. The Scots (3-5 overall) have already matched their win total from a year ago after just eight matches. Senior Amy Wood (Grand Rapids, Mich./City) leads the Scots with a perfect 5-0 record.
