Varsity Club Coaches Luncheon set for Thursday

The spring sports Varsity Club Coaches Luncheon will take place at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Carra Jones Smith Lobby of the Hogan Center on the campus of Alma College. Head coaches of the Scots' spring teams - Matt Chovanec (track & field), Michelle Sabourin (cheer & STUNT), Jake Sabol (baseball), Denny Griffin (softball), Michael Kinney (men's lacrosse), Ashley Johnson (women's lacrosse), Chris Sandro (men's and women's tennis), Charlie Goffnett (women's golf) and Tracy Burton (dance) - will speak, while Topher Goggin, the voice of Alma College sports on, will host the event. The free luncheon will last for one hour and is open to Alma College community as well as the general public. 

Championship season begins for several teams

The swimming and diving team will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships, scheduled for Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 20-24, on the campus of Calvin College. The track and field team will travel to the campus of Trine University for the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24, while the wrestling team will be on the campus of Wabash College (IN) for the NCAA Division III Central Regional on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24. 

Men's basketball wraps up season

The men's basketball team dropped both of its games in the final week of the regular-season, falling at Adrian College by a 67-52 margin on Wednesday (Feb. 14) before falling to Trine University (IN), 94-88, at Art Smith Arena on Saturday (Feb. 17). Senior Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) led Alma with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds against the Bulldogs, while senior Arthell Rosquist (Zion, Ill./Warren Township) netted a career-high 18 points against the Thunder. The Scots finished the season with an 8-17 record, including a 5-9 mark in the MIAA to place seventh. Alma willl graduate five seniors - Rosquist, Sheibert, Ethan Apsey (Hemlock, Mich./Hemlock), Rob Holmes (Ada, Mich./Rockford) and Ben Feliczak (Manistee, Mich./Manistee Catholic) - from the program.

Women's basketball wins final three games to close out 2017-18

The women's basketball team swept its opponents in the final week of the season, defeating Saint Mary's (IN), 58-51, on Wednesday (Feb. 14) and Adrian, 51-49, on Saturday (Feb. 17). The team ends its season on a three-game winning streak having celebrated the careers of its seniors Chloee King (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling Central) and Abbigale Phillipson (Hemlock, Mich./Hemlock) with its win over the Belles. Freshmen Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview) and Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) led the Scots in both of their two wins; Eldridge scored a total of 30 points, including posting a double-double on Wednesday with a career-high 12 rebounds, while Brandt followed up a 12-point, six-rebound performance against Saint Mary's with nine points, eight boards and four blocks off the bench on Saturday. Freshman Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) ends the season tied for first in the MIAA in blocks with 2.0 per game; Brandt finished tied for sixth at 1.4. Also among the conference leaders is sophomore Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek), who is second with 4.5 assists per game. Her season total of 104 is the seventh-most in Alma's history. In addition, Hengesbach's total of 49 rejections is the third-most in a single season in program history.

Men's lacrosse falls in home opener

The men's lacrosse team dropped its season-opening contest on Saturday (Feb. 17) afternoon, falling by a 29-12 margin to Illinois Wesleyan University at Bahlke Field. The Scots were led by sophomore Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School), who scored three goals and tallied four assists. Senior Bryce Bohrmann (Grand Rapids, Mich./Pennfield) also notched a hat trick, as did sophomore Trevor Bailey (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich./Sault Area), who was playing in his first game as a Scot after transferring from Olivet College. Illinois Wesleyan, a participant in the NCAA Division III Tournament last season, took a 9-2 lead after the first quarter and held a 19-6 advantage at the half en route to victory.

STUNT team comes from behind to defeat defending champ Davenport

The STUNT team swept its competition on Sunday (Feb. 18) at the Alma College STUNT Tournament, held at Art Smith Arena. The Scots opened the day with an 18-7 victory over Michigan State University before defeating defending STUNT champion Davenport University, 17-16, in the tournament finale. Alma came from behind in the win against the Panthers, erasing a two-point deficit with a perfect fourth quarter and outscoring Davenport by a 9-6 margin in the final frame to secure the victory. 

Track tunes up at GVSU for MIAA meet

Five members of the track and field made the trek to Grand Valley State University on Friday (Feb. 16) for the GVSU Tune-Up meet, with each Scot competing in one event in preparation for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Championships. Sophomore Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) took second place in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.69 seconds, while sophomore Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) took part in the triple jump, landing in the pit at 12.51 meters to place 3rd. Freshman Torres Ingraham [Nassau, Bahamas/Northview (AL)] took third in the long jump with a mark of 6.68 meters.

Men's tennis avoids sweep by Cornerstone

The men's tennis team dropped a non-conference match against Cornerstone University on Friday (February 16) by an 8-1 margin. The Scots were swept in the doubles matches and picked up a win at No. 6 singles thanks to senior Quinn Summerfield (Lowell, Mich./Lowell), who bested his opponent 6-2, 7-5. 

Women's tennis drops pair of matches

The women's tennis team suffered a pair of losses last week, falling to Spring Arbor, 8-1, in the Scots' home opener on Tuesday (Feb. 13) before a close defeat at Cornerstone University on Friday (Feb. 16). The Scots were defeated by the Eagles, 5-4, with the contest coming down to a match tiebreaker in the No. 4 singles competition. 

Bowlers place 26th at Hoosier Classic

The women's bowling team wrapped up competition in the 49th annual Hoosier Classic on Sunday (Feb. 18), finishing 26th of 66 teams at the event. Senior Brianna Pitre (Saginaw, Mich./Carrollton) led the Scots with a score of 1174 total pins over six games for an average of 195.7.
