Paralympian Scout Basset to speak on February 8

Scout Bassett, a member of the 2016 United States Paralympic Team, will speak at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in Art Smith Arena on the campus of Alma College. The event, sponsored by the Alma College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is free and open to the public. Bassett competed for Team USA's track and field team at the 2016 Rio games, finishing fifth in the 100 meter dash and 10th in the long jump. 

Men's basketball tied for fourth in MIAA with four games to play

The men's basketball team split its games last week, falling at Calvin College, 70-67, on Wednesday (Jan. 31) before recording an 89-85 win over Albion College on Saturday (Feb. 3) at Art Smith Arena. Sophomore Luke Lamoreaux (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) netted a career-high 14 points at Calvin before topping that mark with 16 points against the Britons. Sophomore Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) scored a season-high 21 points and dished out a career-high 14 assists - second-most in school history - while senior Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) tied a career-best with 20 points. With four games to go in the regular-season, the Scots are tied for fourth place and will play the MIAA's top four teams as they look to qualify for their fourth straight MIAA Tournament. 

Women's basketball falls to MIAA leaders

The women's basketball team came out on the short end of two road conference games last week, falling to Calvin College on Wednesday (Jan. 31) and No. 6 Hope College on Saturday (Feb. 3). Sophomore Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) posted eight assists in Alma's two games, and now sits in second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in assists per game at 4.2. Freshmen Mikayela Johns (LeRoy, Mich./Cadillac) and Hannah Syme (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern/Calvin College) each recorded career-highs in points against the Knights, while fellow freshman Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview) put up eight points and seven rebounds against the Flying Dutch.

Wrestlers pin Adrian in final dual of season

The wrestling team took on Adrian College for its final dual of the season on Friday (Feb. 2) and walked away with a 35-15 victory over the Bulldogs, including three victories by pinfall. Sophomore Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) won his match at 141 pounds with a pin 90 seconds into the contest, while freshman Austin Fox (Fort Worth, Texas/Timer Creek) got a pin at 174 pounds. Senior Taylor McPhail (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) returned to the lineup for the first time since December 2, pinning his opponent in the first period of the 197-pound match. 

Swimmers wrap up dual season against Albion

The swimming and diving team hosted Albion College for a Senior Day meet on Saturday (Feb. 3) and fell to the Britons by a 297-180 margin. Junior Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) took first for Alma in both the 100 and 200 butterfly races (1:03.98, 2:22.01), while junior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) won the men's 500 freestyle event with his time of 5:07.11. Ama is idle until February 21-24, when it travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., for the MIAA Championships at Calvin College.

STUNT team sweeps competition at Olivet tournament

The cheerleading/STUNT team swept its competition on Sunday (Feb. 4) as the Scots competed at the Olivet College STUNT Tournament. Alma defeated the host Comets in a modified game, 18-0, and then outscored the University of Michigan, 21-4. 

Men's tennis opens season 2-0

The men's tennis team won both of its matches last weekend to open the 2018 campaign, defeating Holy Cross College (IN), 6-3, on Friday (Feb. 2) before registering a 5-4 win at Albion College on Saturday (Feb. 3). Senior Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) won both of his matches at No. 3 singles, while freshman Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) is also 2-0 with wins in both of his matches at No. 5 singles. In addition, the No. 3 doubles team of Ralston and senior Quinn Summerfield (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) finished the weekend with two wins. 

Women's tennis splits opening matches

The women's tennis team opened its season with a pair of road matches over the weekend, falling to Holy Cross College (IN) by a 5-4 margin on Friday (Feb. 2) before posting a 6-3 victory at Albion College in non-conference action on Saturday (Feb. 3). Sophomore Jessica Penhale (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming), senior Amy Wood (Grand Rapids, Mich./City) and sophomore Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) each won their matches at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles, respectively, in both outings, while the No. 3 doubles team of Wood and Garibay captured both of its matches.
