Men's basketball remains in the thick of MIAA race
The men's basketball team split its games last week to remain one game back of a four-team pack leading the MIAA race with six games left in the regular-season. The Scots, with a 4-4 record, are tied with Albion College for fifth place, while Adrian College, Hope College, Olivet College and Trine University (IN) each have 5-3 marks. Alma opened the week with a 100-97 overtime loss at Trine on Wednesday (Jan. 24), where senior Rob Holmes (Ada, Mich./Rockford) scored a career-high 26 points, tying the game with five seconds left in regulation. On Saturday (Jan. 27), the Scots shot a season-best .556 (15-of-27) from three-point range in an 83-67 win over Kalamazoo College to post a season sweep of the Hornets. Senior Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) netted 17 points in the win.
Women's basketball earns first conference win
The women's basketball team put up its best offensive output of the season and earned its first MIAA win of the season, defeating Olivet on Wednesday (Jan. 24) before being tripped up at Kalamazoo on Saturday (Jan. 27). The Scots shot 52 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point range against the Comets, led by junior Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child), who scored 22 points and sank three three-pointers; both were one off her career-high. Sophomore Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) had nine assists and senior Chloee King (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling Central) had 11 points and eight helpers in the game. Freshman Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview) scored a career-high 22 points at Kalamazoo as King added eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Wrestlers take on ranked competition at Pete Willson Invite
The wrestling team was represented by five Scots at the annual Pete Willson Invitational, held on the campus of Wheaton College, on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 26-27). Thirty-five teams competed in the event, including 12 teams ranked in the latest d3wrestle.com poll. All of the Alma wresters were eliminated in the first day of competition. At 149 pounds, sophomore Jake Anderson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) opened the day with one of two victories for the Scots, defeating Gavin Foushee of Thomas More (KY) in an 11-10 decision. Alma gained its other win via disqualification.
Track team scores three individual victories at Defiance meet
The track and field team travelled to the Defiance College Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 27), where the women's team finished third out of of 10 teams, while the men finished sixth. Sophomore Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca) overwhelmed the competition in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:31.33, while senior Chelse Van Spronsen (Jension, Mich./Jenison) placed first in the 3000-meter run, finishing under 11 minutes for the first time this season. The women's team also claimed victory in pole vault, with junior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich./Hastings) clearing the bar at 3.25 meters, a season-high.
STUNT team opens season at Davenport
The Cheer and STUNT team opened the 2018 season on Sunday (Jan. 28) afternoon, participating in the Davenport STUNT Games. The Scots went 2-1 during the event, defeating Olivet College and Ferris State University by 18-0 margins before falling to defending national champion Davenport University, 18-12, in the rematch of last season's College STUNT Association Division II championship game.
Swimmers host Hope in first home meet of season
The swimming and diving team hosted Hope College on Saturday (Jan. 27) for the Scots first home meet of the season. The Flying Dutch swept the Scots in the men's and women's events and won the meet by a combined score of 297-112. Freshman Max Carey (Highland, Mich./International Academy West) captured the men's 100 butterfly with a time of 56.66, while freshman Haven Westra (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) had the top time in the women's 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:38.23.
Bowlers win final American Heartland Tournament
The women's bowling team took first at the final American Heartland Tournament of the season on Sunday (Jan. 28), with freshman Kasidey Easlick (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin) posting the third-highest score of the tournament and earning all-tournament team honors with a 213.25 average over four games. On Saturday (Jan. 27), the Scots placed seventh in the American Heartland III tournament, with freshman Brook Fornetti (Iron Mountain, Mich./Iron Mountain) rolling a team-high 194.4 average.
