Men's basketball one game out of MIAA lead

The men's basketball team split its two conference games last week, falling by a 99-88 margin on Wednesday (Jan. 17) at Hope College before defeating MIAA leader Adrian College, 73-66, on Saturday (Jan. 20) night at Art Smith Arena. Senior Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) and sophomore Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) each netted 20 points in the loss to the Flying Dutchmen, while Scheibert recorded his first career double-double in the win over the Bulldogs with 18 points and career-high 12 rebounds. Stevens also recorded his 100th assist of the season in the victory, becoming the 10th player in program history to accomplish the feat. Alma, with a 3-3 record in conference play, is one game out from a four-team logjam at the top of the MIAA standings. 

Women's basketball falls to pair of MIAA's best

The women's basketball team fell in two contests this past week to Albion and at No. 11 Trine. Freshman Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) posted a career-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds against the Britons and came up two points short of her second career double-double at the Thunder. Sophomore Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) continues to lead the conference in assists per game (4.2) while senior Chloee King (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling Central) is third in the MIAA in three-pointers made per game (2.0).

Pins by Barnes and Vondrasek highlight week for wrestlers

The wrestling team opened the week with a 24-21 setback against Davenport University on Tuesday (Jan. 16) at Art Smith Arena. The Scots scored victories in five weight classes - including pins by freshmen Joe Vondrasek (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) and Wesley Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) - as the dual came down to the final bout, where freshman Austin Popp (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) suffered a 6-4 decision at 285 pounds. On Saturday (Jan. 20) at the annual Alma Open, Barnes scored three pins to finish fifth in the 184-pound bracket, while Vondrasek posted a pair of pins en route to a sixth-place showing at 165 pounds.

Track team dominates pits at Aquinas Quad Open

Sophomores John Mitryzyk (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) and Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) led the track and field team as the Scots finished fourth in the men's and women's events at Friday's (Jan. 19) Aquinas College Quad Meet. Mitryzyk won the long jump with a career-best 6.63 meters while Hirschenberger took the triple jump event with a career-best mark of 12.97 meters. 

STUNT team opens season at Davenport

The Cheer/STUNT team will begin the 2018 campaign and its quest for a fifth consecutive appearance in the College STUNT National Championship on Sunday, Jan. 28, when it travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., to participate in the Davenport University STUNT Tournament. The Scots are scheduled to face teams from Olivet College and Ferris State University before taking on the host Panthers in a rematch of the 2017 STUNT National Championship game. 

Swimmers fall at Calvin

The swimming and diving team dropped a dual meet at Calvin College on Saturday (Jan. 20) in its final road dual of the season. In the women's events, sophomore Sydney Louis-Ferdinand (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) took first in the women's 200 individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:27.17, while junior Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) captured the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 1:03.27. In the 200 freestyle, Lehman placed second (2:08.45). In the 100 breaststroke, freshman Haven Westra (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) won with her time of 1:13.96. She also took second place in the 1000 freestyle (12:08.10). On the men's side, junior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) placed second in a pair of events, finishing the 500 and 1000 freestyle with times of 5:14.23 and 10:53.15. Freshman Max Carey also came in second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.44.

Bowlers place 22nd at Kegel/ISPBA Collegiate Classic

The women's bowling team finished 22nd out of 66 teams at the Kegel/ISBPA Collegiate Classic on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 20-21) in Addison, Ill. Sophomore Emma Davis (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) was the top finisher for the Scots in the individual competition, placing 64th out of 430 bowlers with a total score of 925, while sophomore Josee Hale (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) had the high game for the Scots with a 209.
