Men's basketball routs Albion, falls in last second stunner against Olivet

The men's basketball team split its games last week, dropping Albion College by a 70-54 margin on Wednesday (Jan. 10) before suffering an 89-88 loss to Olivet College on Saturday (Jan. 13) at Art Smith Arena. Sophomore Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led Alma with 17 points against the Britons, while senior Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) netted a career-high 18 points in the loss to the Comets. In the latest MIAA statistics, Stevens ranks second in the league with 5.8 assists per game, while Kevin Scheibert is fifth with 6.1 rebounds per contest. Sophomore Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and freshman Jason Majerle (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) also rank among the MIAA's top five for three-point shooting percentage. Harvey is hitting 45 percent of his shots from behind the arc, while Majerle is hitting threes as a .436 clip.  

Women's basketball swept by MIAA opponents

The women's basketball team dropped two games last week to No. 3 Hope and Albion. Freshmen Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio/Arch Bishop Alter) and Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) each scored careers highs - Long with 14 against the Flying Dutch and Brandt with 16 against the Britons. The Scots had their best offensive performance in their last six games against Hope, making 24 field goals and shooting 50 percent from the field.

Wrestling drops dual at Olivet

The wrestling team fell by a 38-9 margin at Olivet College on Thursday (Jan. 11) as the 13th-ranked Comets took eight of the 10 matches. At 141 pounds, sophomore Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) earned six points for the Scots, pinning Olivet's Andre Bourlier in just 71 seconds. Ladd entered the meet ranked eighth in the country. Sophomore Jake Anderson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) added three points, defeating the Comets' Drew Mandell in a 10-9 decision.

Track defeats Davenport at Skoog Invitational

The track and field team travelled to the campus of Central Michigan University for their annual Jack Skoog Invitational on Friday (Jan. 12). The men's team claimed victory over Davenport University 65.5-57.5 at the invitational. By NCAA rules, Alma and Davenport were scored separately from Central Michigan, Oakland University, and the University of Detroit-Mercy, which also participated in the event. Sophomore Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) placed third in the triple jump, posting a new collegiate career-best of 12.54 meters, while sophomore John Mitrzyk (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) placed fifth in the long jump, setting a new career-best of 6.49 meters.

Bowlers resume season at Buckeye Baker Classic

The women's bowling team traveled to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday (Jan. 13) for the Buckeye Baker Classic, a ten-team tournament played in 36 Baker-style games. The Scots advanced to the finals bracket with a fourth-place finish and score of 5770. Alma took on top-seeded Pikeville (OH) and fell in a best two out of three competition to end the day in fourth.
