Men's basketball splits opening conference games

The men's basketball team split the first two games against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition last week, routing Kalamazoo College by a 78-43 margin on Wednesday (Jan. 3) before falling at home to Calvin College, 80-63, on Saturday (Jan. 6). Senior Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) led the Scots at Kalamazoo with 13 points, while junior Scott Maki (Holly, Mich./Holly) tallied a career-high 13 points to lead the Scots against the Knights. In the latest MIAA statistics, Scheibert ranks fifth with an average of six rebounds per game, while sophomore Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) is second with a three-point shooting percentage of .464. 

Women's basketball looking for first MIAA win

The women's basketball team dropped a pair of conference games last week to Kalamazoo College, 57-45, on Wednesday (Jan. 3), and at Calvin College, 59-50, on Saturday (Jan. 6). Freshman Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio/Arch Bishop Alter) scored a career-high 12 points in the Scots' loss at Calvin. Alma shot 46 percent from the field - the Scots are the fourth best shooting team in the conference at 40 percent - against the Knights, who are one of three teams in the MIAA with a 4-1 record. Freshman Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) posted five blocks over the two games - she currently sits fourth in the MIAA in blocks per game with 1.6.

Wrestling falls to Trine in home opener

The wrestling team hosted its first dual meet of the season on Saturday (Jan. 6), welcoming Trine University to Art Smith Arena. The Scots came up short in the matchup, falling by a final score of 24-21. Alma opened the meet with three straight victories by major decision, followed by a technical fall victory for sophomore Jake Anderson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams). The match was decided in the heavyweight bout, where Trine's Zach Saylor scored a 2-1 decision over freshman Austin Popp (Clinton, Mich./Clinton). 

Swimmers split dual at Olivet

The swimming and diving team traveled to Olivet College on Saturday (Jan. 6) for their first MIAA meet of the new year. The women's team won their dual with a total of 148 points while the men fell to the Comets as a total of 13 Scots captured first place in their individual races. Sophomore Sydney Louis-Ferdinand (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) placed first in a trio of events - the 500 and 1000 freestyle races and the 100 butterfly - for the women, while junior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) took second in the 100, 500, and 1000 freestyle events for the men.
