Scots to host basketball, wrestling events this week

The women's basketball team will host Kalamazoo College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Art Smith Arena as the Scots return to action for the first time in 2018 and look for their first MIAA win. The men's basketball team will open the new year on the road on Wednesday at Kalamazoo College and will return home on Saturday, Jan.  6, to host Calvin College at 3 p.m. as part of a doubleheader at Art Smith Arena. The wrestling team will also host their home opener that day, welcoming Trine University to campus for a 7 p.m. dual match.   

Men's basketball swept at Wooster Classic

The men's basketball team fell in both games of the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic last weekend in Wooster, Ohio, dropping an 85-82 decision to Emory & Henry (VA) College in overtime before suffering an 88-65 setback to Worchester Polytechnic Institute in the tournament's consolation game. Sophomore Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) dished out a career-high 12 assists against Emory & Henry, the most by an Alma player wince 1989, and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds, while junior Doug Bradfield (Mason, Mich./Mason) earned a spot on the all-tournament team after scoring in double-figures in both contests. The Scots finished the non-conference portion of their season with a 3-8 mark, but faced one of the toughest schedules in NCAA Division III. 

Women's basketball falls twice in Bluffton tournament

The women's basketball team dropped its two games last week at the Bluffton Holiday Tournament, the first to Bluffton (OH) 66-49 and the second to Mount Union (OH), 78-54. Freshman Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview) led the Scots with 12 points in the loss to Bluffton. It was her fourth straight game she scored double figures - she averaged 14.3 points per game over that span - after not reaching that mark in any of her prior six games. Senior Chloee King (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling Central) scored a team-high 12 points in the loss to Mount Union and sophomore Jessi Jordan (Mason, Mich./Williamston) added a career-high nine points and six rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) also dished out a career-high seven assists against the Raiders.

Wrestling's Ladd ranked among best at 141

Sophomore Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) of the wrestling team is ranked third in the 141-pound weight class in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings. Ladd went 1-2 last weekend at the Chicago Duals, winning by pin and technical fall before dropping a match to No. 16 Jordan Meyer of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. As a team, the Scots went 0-3, falling to UW-Eau Claire, University of Chicago and Harper College (IL).
