Basketball teams, wrestling team in action over holidays
The men's basketball team will take part in a pair of holiday tournaments over the next two weeks, starting on Wednesday-Thursday, Dec. 20-21, when Alma will be in Daytona Beach, Fla., to play in the 2017 Daytona Beach Shootout. The Scots will face Berry College (GA) on Wednesday, followed by a matchup with Bates College (ME) on Thursday. After Christmas, Alma will play in the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. The Scots will face Emory & Henry College (VA) on December 29 and then either Worchester Polytechnic Institute (MA) or the host Fighting Scots on December 30.
The women's basketball team will travel to Defiance College (OH) and Siena Heights University this week before taking part in the Bluffton Holiday Tournament on December 29-30 at Bluffton University (OH). Alma will take on host Bluffton and the University of Mount Union (OH) at the event. Finally, the wrestling team will be in action after Christmas, traveling to the University of Chicago on December 30 for the Chicago Duals. All other winter sports teams are on break until after January 1.
Men's basketball splits non-conference games
The men's basketball team split its two games last week, falling to North Central College (IL) by a 73-52 margin on Friday (Dec. 15) at Art Smith Arena before posting an 87-82 victory at Wheaton College (IL) on Saturday (Dec. 16) night. Sophomore Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led the Scots in the loss to the Cardinals, scoring 15 points and dishing out six assists as the Scots were limited to a season-low 32 percent shooting from the floor. The following night, sophomore Preston Laketa (Concord, Mich./Hanover-Horton) scored 22 points as Alma shot a season-best 52 percent against the Thunder.
Women's basketball suffers close loss at Saint Mary's
The women's basketball team continues to search for its first win after falling at Saint Mary's College (IN) by a 66-65 margin on Saturday (Dec. 16) afternoon. Freshman Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview) led the Scots (0-7 overall, 0-4 MIAA) with a game- and career-high 17 points and also added eight rebounds, while senior Chloee King (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling Central) tallied 12 points, seven boards and six assists.
Wrestling picks up first dual meet win
The wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the Gator Boots Duals in Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday (Dec. 16), defeating Lakeland College (WI) for its first victory of the season. The Scots lost matches to No. 20 Millikin University (IL) and Thomas More College (KY) and had four wrestlers notch 2-1 records during the day. Sophomore Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon), ranked sixth nationally in the 141-pound weight class, had his 16-match winning streak snapped against Millikin's Chris Williams, who was ranked second, before pinning his opponents from Lakeland and Thomas More.
